I want to visit the island of Malta, I want to be touristic but I also want to enjoy the sea. I have thought about doing a cruise but I don't know if it's worth it. I'm interested in what every tourist looks for: good prices, but it should be close to Malta, Gozo or Comino.

I remember traveling with my parents in the 70s (when flying was much more of a luxury and privilege than it is these days), and remember there was a hold luggage check restriction - although the check in clerk would often not bat an eye for a kilo or 2 overweight.

But I don't remember the humiliation of having to force whatever hand luggage we were carrying into a metal frame to be permitted to take it on-board!

Does anyone know when this came into being, and any of the history behind it?

Does anyone have any information about buses/taxi fares from the airport? Airport taxi's are known ripoffs, but i have no idea about alternatives.

I'm looking at moving to the Gulf. Advice needed. From what I can see these two; Abu Dhabi and Dubai are the ones in closest contention for me. I'm into arts and food; so I'm thinking the more laid back approach of Abu Dhabi maybe suit me better. There are more flights from where I live to Dubai, but from what I read is that Dubai will run out of oil in maybe 10 years, whereas they will keep pumping in Abu Dhabi until long after I'm gone. This will likely have an impact on property values in the near future? I don't know how reliant Dubai still is on it's oil - I'd guess a lot? What does the future hold?
