Lisbon is like a city on display, draped across the hillsides above the Rio Tejo, and a beautiful display it is, too. Dig deeper into Portugal’s capital, though, and you’ll quickly find that it’s unpretentious about its beauty; welcoming and lively, yet still hiding sumptuous corners unchanged since the 1930s, and brimming with the kind of charm that had you traveling in the first place.

It might have tinges of the old and antiquated – and alluring ones at that – but part of Lisbon are extremely up to the minute. The MUDE Fashion and Design museum will take fashionistas through the latest of the minute styles, while there’s plenty in the way of modern art, art deco and gorgeous fusion cuisine to track down, too.

The old parts of the city, though, are very much as they’ve always been, with tables set out on cobbled back streets serving olives and local wine, and the same rustic, about-to-break trams winding through the streets that have been there for decades. The historical sights haven’t changed much, either. Most of them sit at the top of the many hills, giving spectacular views from the undulating peaks down to the shimmering coastline.

The Belem Tower is the city’s iconic sight, a towering seaside turret that from certain angles looks like it’s disconnected from the shore altogether. The Jeronimos Monastery was built in the 16th century to commemorate Vasco De Gama’s departure for India, and is now a world heritage monument coated in sculpture and hosting the explorer’s tomb. Look up, and you can hardly miss the Castle of St. George, which dates back in parts to the 6th century, and – though very peaceful now – still hosts cannons, a guarding moat and a full on multimedia exhibition to help you understand it all.

Don’t leave Lisbon, though, without taking a lengthy stroll around and finding out just what the city is about for yourself. Grab a jar of olives and some freshly baked bread, and drift around the back alleys, stopping for coffee (or Golao) or to explore a tiny local store. Lisbon, you see, is a city that’s about far more than its sights.

    • Comércio Plaza
Praça do Comércio (also known as Terreiro do Paço) The most beautiful square in Lisbon, this harmonious space by the river is the perfect tribute to those who died in the earthquake of 1755.

The crashing of the lower part of the city allowed a reconstruction where the perfect geometry contrasts with the narrow, winding streets that survived in the surrounding hills. This area was occupied by the royal palaces, thus the old name still commonly used of "Terreiro do Paço".

Nowadays the surrounding buildings house part of the government. The balance of all the elements in the square is better seen if you arrive from the river. All the elements, including the statue of king's José I, date form the 18th century.

The only changes made in the square were pavements and... colors. Originally yellow, in 1910 the republicans decided to change it to pink. Recent analysis decided to return to the original yellow, and that's what is expecting you.

      • O Pote - Family food
If you find yourself in the new part of Lisbon, around Arieiro or Av. Roma then you may eat at "O Pote". That's my everyday restaurant in Lisbon.

It features Portuguese food, homemade type, with a long menu, good quality and reasonable price. I started to eat there in 1962, when it was only a small tavern, with prices for students. The employees (9 brothers at all) bought it later, and started to enlarge and modernize the place, always with good attention to the clients.

Now, those kids are old guys like me, but it's good to confirm, each time I go there, that everything remains as before.

A group from Hungary went there in May 2013... and I got a gift for the suggestion... Thanks.

My eldest son is now working close to it, and that's a new good reason to keep going there. I do it almost each month, and... great, as usual. The only problem is to select one from the 12 desired dishes among the more than 30 in the menu.

      • Charcutaria restaurant - Alentejo at its best
Charcutaria restaurant Located near Chiado, in the centre of town, there's a restaurant so discreet that you may pass by without noticing it. And it would be a pity, because it's really an excellent place to eat. The starters, main meals and wines are delicious; the only drawback is the price, not excessive but far from the cheap range. One of my favorite Portuguese dishes - carne de porco a alentejana, (pork meat fried with clams with a coriander sauce) - gets here the name "medalhões de porco com ameijoas", and, believe me, it's impossible to do it better. However, everything else deserves your choice. A few friends in Virtual Tourist (RIP) followed my advice, and it was nice to receive their thanks for the suggestion. That's the double big pleasure now in Red Planet - being useful and showing our best to visitors.

Marriage to the river When I lived in Lisbon (I left in 1972 but still pass much of my time there) the city was divorced from the river. Ugly and dirty banks, abandoned buildings, dangerous territory! With EXPO 98 Lisbon rediscovered the river, and now Tejo is not only the traditional theme for poems and fado, but also a well maintained resource, with lots of places where we can safely stroll, rest, or practice any kind of sport. The eastern part of Lisbon, then, was awful, a true shame for all. The needs to embellish the area to receive EXPO exhibition, gave a "face-lift" to a large area, and some old and degraded buildings were recovered. Now, travelling in or around Marvila, for instance, it's a true pleasure to those that once knew the area and confirmed that, when man wants everything has a solution. Even at a price that we don't know when will it be totally paid.
