There were protests in Leon, Masaya, Managua and Granada against the Sandinistas government last year and some more incidents in February this year (2019) that have been suppressed by paramilitary groups.

You can drive all around the country with no problem, the national parks are open to visit as well as the natural reserves, there being months without any barricades in any city and the self-imposed curfew is no longer anywhere.

You will see riot police everywhere, to stop any groups from do any demonstrations, so do not get scared if you see police in black uniforms with big guns.

Something that has affected Nicaragua is a bad reputation based on wrong assumptions and outdated stories. As a matter of fact until April 2018 when the civil unrest happened Nicaragua was known as the safest country in Central America.

The situation on the ground in Nicaragua remains volatile. More as we get close to a year that the unrest started it April 18, 2018.

The crisis in Nicaragua, which began in April 2018, has left 325 dead and 779 people imprisoned for protesting, according to the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (CIDH).

It is not possible to guarantee that Nicaragua is 100% safe to come but by using common sense and following some useful Tips we assure you that you will have a really nice experience in this beautiful country that is going through difficult times at the moment.

FOLLOW THESE TIPS TO STAY SAFE NICARAGUA:Foreigners are not deliberately targeted by the violence, so make sure you get the latest information before traveling around Nicaragua.

Plan your route carefully; Expats groups, backpackers group or forums have updated information about Nicaragua.

Avoid political demonstrations as they can become violent.

Never drive on rural roads at night. Don’t drive at night at all, Most of the roads don´t have light so they are really dark and many horses or cows can be on the road.

If you must, stay on major highways and carry a cell phone, cell phones ($15 to $20) can be purchase at any gas station.

Don't play the hero, Do not resist a robbery attempt, as many robbers carry weapons and they are never alone.

Carry all important documents on an underclothes money belt.Avoid carrying expensive jewelry and large cameras dangling from your shoulder, better around the neck.

These items will only attract undue attention. When going out at night bring a digital camera instead of the expensive digital one.

Bring as few valuables as possible, and if you have to carry expensive items, get travel insurance.

Where possible, withdraw cash from inside a bank. Avoid using cash points in dodgy areas and don´t go near them at night.

Don’t leave valuables in your backpack. You’re usually asked to leave your backpack under the bus or on top of the bus on long journeys so carry valuables with you.

Don't put your bag under the seat as it can be taken (or cut open).Be aware of your situation at all times and be extra vigilant when the situation warrants it.
