Never been on Amtrak
It doesn't come near the Phoenix area...well, there's no way to board near Phoenix).

I'd like to take a trip alone. I'd like a bedroom but I'd also like to sit in a car with other passengers. Is that workable?

You can drive to Maricopa and board the Sunset Limited, or drive to Kingman and board the Southwest Chief.

    There is a shuttle from Sky Harbor to Flagstaff. Roomettes can be quite social if you leave the door open. And you have access to the lounge cars, and if the train is not full you can sit in the coaches.

Both the Southwest Chief and the Sunset Limited offer glorious scenery. As a first-class passenger you have the best of worlds: privacy and comfort when you want it, company in the observation car, and good food and conversation in the dining car.

Fly to Chicago, train to Emeryville (Oakland) then fly back to Phoenix. trust me, you WILL see scenery. Roomettes aren't bad, a bit cramped but definitely livable and when you want to be social there's always the sightseer lounge.

technically, there is a train station a bit south at Maricopa, that is supposed to be the new "phoenix" station.

Tuscon has a full-service train station. Or Flagstaff.

But more about onboard... Yes, you can have a bedroom….and when you don't want to sit or lay in your bedrooom, you walk car-to-car to the lounge/café car or to the diner car and you can hang out with other people, or eat, or order drinks, play cards/games, or just look out the windows on both sides and enjoy the view!
