Isla Ometepe is an island located in Lake Nicaragua. The island exists of two volcanoes, Concepción and Maderas. The shape of the island is created by the volcanoes and looks like an eight. There are roads around the volcanoes, which come together in the middle. To reach Isla Ometepe, you have to take the ferry from San Jorge or Granada, which will bring you to the biggist village on Isla Ometepe, Moyogalpa.

Both volcanoes are possible to climb. However for Maderas you need a local guide to find the summit. The track to summit is steep and can be slippery. The west side of the track is covered in cloud forest and the east side is mainly covered with coffee plantations.

Isla Ometep is known for its fantastic sunsets and when you are lucky you might see a fresh water shark. The only fresh water shark in the world lives in Lake Nicaragua.

Flights to Ometepe are not running because there isn't enough demand (it was never a popular route anyway, it's easy enough and much cheaper to hop over on the ferries that run all day.).

You can take a ferry to Ometepe from Rivas if staying in San Juan del Sur you can take a taxi to Rivas.

It is not difficult to get to Ometepe, you must go to Rivas, there you can take a collective taxi to san jorge for 20/30 cordobas each, in san jorge you have about 10 ferries per day that cross the island (around an hour's trip on the boat).

Remember the only working ATMs are in Moyogalpa, so bring cash from the port town/main land with you to avoid any annoying trips back over there just for funds.
  • Getting around? You can't Edit

Once on the island you have bus service, taxis, or you can rent a motorcycle, scooter or atv to move around the island.

Things are kind of spread out across the island. Santo Domingo has the biggest beach and is closest to Ojo de Agua, but there are other beaches at Charco Verde and La Punta Jesús Maria.

Merida is closest to the San Ramon waterfall and kayaking the Rio Istiam. Balgüe/Santa Cruz are great starting points for hiking Maderas. Moyogalpa (the main port town) is the best place to stay to hike Concepcion.

It also has a Pali grocery store (and other stores) and the only ATMs on the island. It’s the closest to La Punta, too.

Just to give a bit of distance perspective:Moyogalpa to Ojo de Agua: approx 24km. Moyogalpa to Balgüe: 32kmSo, you will have to figure out a way to get around to see the things on the island and there isn’t really a “perfect” place to stay to see everything.

My recommendation is to pick a place to stay that appeals to you, regardless of location. And you can figure out your time on Ometepe from there.

Check out the delicious chocolates and beautiful location at el pital Ometepe. A raw chocolate factory on Ometepe located between Santa Cruz and Balgue.

On an overnight visit it will be a challenge to see very much of Ometepe. Stay at least 2 nights.

    • San Juan del Sur
San Juan del Sur is a coastal town in south western Nicaragua, approximately 40 mintues from the Costa Rican border. The next largest town is Rivas, which is the capital of the departamento. San Juan is small, sleepy, laid back, slow paced, good vibe, easy to navigate, well connected ex-fishing village.

Town is located on natural picturesque harbor, shaped as nearly perfect crescent and the waters are fairly calm. Large river enters the bay trough the beach sand and makes water a bit murky. Seafood and fishing are a way of life for many of the people in this area. The Cara del Indio, a unique formation on a cliff face, is visible from certain locations along the shore line.

San Juan del Sur was very much a "surfers town" until it become popular with tourist and wealthy. Most of the cliffs and hills in the area are now covered with mansions and expensive condominiums.
Row of nice restaurants edges the beach and increasing number of hotels and hostels offers all price ranges.

      • Island has so much to do. People friendly just watch out for the cattle and horses. Stayed in 3 different parts if the island. Taxi drivers will lie say buses are not running and over charge. Negotiate always.
      • Two volcanoes make up this island and you can take a ferry over and enjoy the island beauty and relaxed vibe. There are wild animals everywhere, including white faced monkeys and wild horses roaming the beaches. Not every beach is perfect to swim at, but every angle of the island is definitely beautiful. You can hike the volcanoes or simply find some beachside shade. But be warned, it's hot on Ometepe.
      • Make sure you spend at least 3 days on this fascinating island. Lots to do for kids and adults. Best area for accommodation and food is around the Balgue area. Island is big, plan your transport.
      • An absolute must see while in Nicaragua! Our favorite town was Balgue, on the Maderas side of the island - great food options. Ojo de Agua and San Ramon Cascade are great options for activities, but there are also guided tour options to hike both volcanoes if you want.
      • great beach but you have to rent a motor bike to get everywhere
