  Baltimore hits a happy medium between the hectic frigidity of the Northeast and the lazy mugginess of the South. It has a homey, blue-collar atmosphere, much like Philadelphia or Boston, that is universally appealing. Known as 'Charm City,' Baltimore is unique and endearing in many ways.
  
  It can even claim to be home to the Star Spangled Banner. Literally: this is the city where Francis Scott Key first wrote the song that’s droned through before every major sporting event. The city has a long and impressive history, having once fought the first of the British invaders as the location of the opening shots of the American Civil War, as well as being at the very core of the American Civil Rights movement.
  
  These days the history still shines through a pleasant modern façade, especially at spots like Fort McHenry, a key defensive location against a British naval attack in 1812. The cannons still line the harbor wall, while the surrounding area still consists of many of the cobbled, thin and winding streets that were found here a century ago. Stopping for a local beer or two in the old-world pubs around the waterfront makes for an unusual and impressive Baltimore experience.
  
  Foodies will quickly fall in love with Lexington Market, a spot where the cuisine is pointedly off the wall, and includes a ‘pit beef sandwich’ (pit beef is cooked for 24 hours in a hole in the ground) served with horse radish, local seafood including crab and eels, and lake trout, which is neither a trout nor from the lake, but does taste good. You could quickly fall in love with local Baltimore cuisine: this is a real weight gain holiday. You can wash all the impressive foodstuffs down with an array of local craft beer, too.
  
  The trendy neighborhood of Fell's Point has long been a hot spot for restaurants, nightclubs and art galleries; more recently, Federal Hill and Canton have joined it in attracting a diverse crowd of locals.
  
  Throw in an impressive zoo, a vast selection of museums (including the intensely eccentric American Visionary Arts Museum) and one of the most progressive outlooks on life of any American city and plenty see Baltimore as an essential part of any American travel experience.
  
  Hop on the water taxi through the bay, make the most of an unusually well maintained and old-world selection of history and revel in the independence of a city that’s culturally refined and interesting around almost every corner.

• Columbia

  Columbia is a planned community in Howard County that sits roughly halfway between the cities of Baltimore and Washington, D.C. Established in 1967 by the developer James Rouse, who also oversaw the revitilization of Baltimore's Inner Harbor, Columbia today has nearly 100,000 thousand residents living in ten self-contained villages. Each village emulates a small town with its own schools, community center, recreation facilities, and extensive path systems.
  
  Though not incorporated, the Columbia Association serves as a large-scale homeowners association and de facto government. Columbia is home to the outdoor concert venue Merriweather Post Pavilion.

  Overall, staff was very friendly and helpful. Room could definitely use some improvements/maintenance. Would have preferred room descriptions and images on website so that we could have had a better idea if what they looked like and could make an informed choice. Was not a bad stay but not a place we would make an effort to go back to.

  Enjoyed our short stay for New Year's with our dog. Room was clean, comfortable and bright. Staff was super friendly and accommodating. Our dog even got some hugs and kisses. Will definitely stay there again.

  Update: Professional oversight has been overlooked. Still clean, but staff behave as if in their own home. One was taking curlers out of her hair at the front desk. Other times no one was at the front desk nor answering the phone. Decor is dated at best, cheap and tacky such as the "Neutreugena" holder for another brand of mini toiletries. White towels were thin and dingy. The last time I was there there the entire experience was delightful. Old review: Location is excellent - a few blocks walk to the city's best restaurants and Mount Vernon cultural attractions on a quiet street. Literally every single square inch of the hotel from the stairs to behind the sofas to the bedroom and bath and the common kitchen sparkles with cleanliness Staff sparkle too, and make you truly feel at home. It's all just very harmonious. Don't expect to ooh and ah over museum-accurate furnishings, though each space is arranged to meet guests' needs and comfort. Free copies of Preservation magazine for guests and a Continental breakfast downstairs.

  The hotel is located to cool places like the Bun Shop and Leon's Bar. The rooms are uniquely shaped and decorated. There is a really beautiful spiral staircase to the left as you walk in.

  My boyfriend stayed here and enjoyed it. The best part of this hotel was the room, with wonderful furniture and bay windows letting in lots of light. The fireplace was a fun touch. The location is also great, a quick walk away from many cafés and restaurants. Some of the decor was a little confusing, and that's my only reason for not rating this higher. Otherwise, it was excellent.
