  The Miho Museum is s found some 30 km (18.5 miles) outside Kyoto.
  
  Set deep in a forested nature preserve, is the Miho Museum, designed by internationally acclaimed architect L M. Pei.
  
  A tunnel leads to this outstanding privately-owned collection of ancient Egyptian, South Asian, Chinese, Persian and, of course, Japanese masterworks.
  
  The building's exterior, interior and exhibit displays are triumphs of design and harmony between old and new, East and West, simplicity and complexity.
  
  The Miho is not to be missed by anyone interested in Asian art and design, both ancient and modern.

• Kiyomizu-dera

  Kiyomizu temple is one of Kyoto's oldest, is so popular that on Sundays it offers all the serenity of rush hour at Kyoto's garish new station. But don't let that put you off.
  
  Founded in 788 just before the city entered its golden age as the imperial capital its numerous buildings nestle lovingly against steep Mt. Higashiyama in a dramatic cascade of thatched and tiled roofs. However, most of what we see today is actually a 17th-century reconstruction of the original 8th-century structure.
  
  With its numerous buildings set within extensive grounds Kiyomizu’s main attraction is the hondo (main hall). This elevated structure’s projecting wooden terrace is supported by a vast arrangement of 139 massive interlocking beams.
  
  Across on the mountainside is another terrace on which imperial courtiers and dignitaries would sit, while enjoying dance performance and music recitals on the hondo’s broad terrace.

• Nanzen-ji Temple

  Nanzenji was a 13th-century palace which contains 12 temples and monasteries.
  
  The impressive main entrance was constructed in 1628. There is a notorious local story where a robber known as Goemon lshikawa was boiled alive at this site in an huge iron cauldron.  In order to save his son he held him aloft to keep him from suffering the same fate.
  
  Since then, old-fashioned Japanese iron bathtubs have been gruesomely known as “goemon-buro."

• Fushimi Inari Taisha

  The Fushimi-Inari Shrine is in southern Kyoto. It is a shrine to the Shinto rice deity Inari. It is the most famous and important Inari shrine in the land.
  
  The city of Kyoto can be said to be overflowing with "must-see" places, but this is one place almost certain to use up any superlative descriptions that you might have in your tired-out lexicon.

• Zenrinji(Eikan-do)

  The Etkan do is an exquisite temple set against the hillside. Its beautiful Amida Buddha statue is, unusually turning to look back over its shoulder.
  
  Its strange posture commemorates a legendary statue that came to life and then berated Eikan, the astonished monk looking on for pausing from his ritual chanting.
  
  Every autumn you can see special night illuminations of the flaming red and orange of the maple trees, highlighted by spotlight.

  The effect can only be described as sublime and exceptional.

• Tofukuji Temple

  Tofukuji is a significant Zen temple complex; as well as many impressive buildings - Tofukuji has 4 Zen gardens located in the "hojo" which means "abbot's quarters". 
  
  At Tofukuji's center is there is a gorge with maple trees.

• Chion-in

  The massive Chioninji is home to the Jodo ("Pure Land") Buddhist sect, which in the 12th century spread the appeal of Buddhism to the uneducated classes.
  
  Looming to an imposing height of 24 m (79 ft), its entrance gate is thought to be the largest structure of its kind in the world. The ringing of Chioninji's bell. Japan's largest and best known, is televised nationally when resident monks usher in the New Year.

• Maruyama Park

  Maruyama Park is located in the north-eastern part of Gion, and is a popular recreation area. It is nearby 2 visit-worthy temples; the Chion-in and the Heian Shrine.

  In the vicinity are two museums that reflect Kyoto's extensive history as a magnet for Japan's finest craftsmen; the Museum of Traditional Industry and then National Museum of Modern Art.

• Ginkakujicho

  Ginkakuji, the know as the famous "Silver Pavilion". It was original conceived to have a silver-leaf covering, but it never received it.  
  
  The place was constructed in the fifteenth century by Yoshimasa Ashikaga (an aesthete-mystic shogun) whose use for it was to host esoteric tea ceremonies where the highlight of the event was moon-watching from the elegant gardens.
  
  If you see something that looks like Mt Fuji - it is actually a pile of white gravel that was left over from the construction - still it is a fun, possibly apocryphal story!

  Must visit! Worth your time and money. I really liked the museum its surroundings. Covered by nature and a tunnel which connects the museum’s reception with the museum. The exhibition theme changes from time to time. Please check their website on forehand to check if its open. Location: Please check before going to make sure you are on the bus. There is only 1 bus per hour. Please take the JR Tokaido Line (local, rapid or special rapid service) from Kyoto Station to Ishiyama Station. From there take Teisan bus number 150 to the Miho Museum (820 yen single journey , 50 min). Payment can only be done CASH. You cant swap your transportation card. The bus departs from bus stop three and says Miho Museum in both English and Japanese on its sign. The bus arrives at the museum's reception building which contains the ticket desk, gift shop, and a small restaurant. Purchase your tickets here before making your way to the museum's entrance either on foot (ten minutes) or by free museum shuttle. I suggest to walk and you will enjoy and catch some fresh air. Restaurant: Delicious food but they serve no meat! Coming just before lunch time if you are in a hurry or to avoid long queues. Advise: Those who would like to take nice photos , avoid weekends and come on weekdays taking the first bus! There will be already some people who came by car or tour operator. If you come after 11 its very crowded.

  A tranquil place. Very nice vegetarian food made with local produce. The museum is beautifully built. Well worth the long drive.

  stunning mountainside views and outstanding collection displayed in I.M. Pei building. The Peach Valley restaurant has several vegan or veg friendly options, featuring only organic and biodynamic products, at very reasonable prices. Exhibitions vary, so check website before making the trip. Directions: take JR Biwako line from Kyoto station to Ishiyama , then bus 150. Or, take Tozai subway from Kyoto to Yamashina, transfer to JR Biwako line for Ishiyama, then Bus 150. Bus is cash only , 820JPY.

  Created by IM Pei, the Miho Museum is located in the middle of the beautiful Shigaraki Mountains just outside Kyoto. It is quite literally intended to be a paradise on Earth, and it worked for me; it is my favorite museum in the world from its architecture to the master pieces presented inside. The museum's collection features over 2,000 works of art, with the North wing housing temporary exhibitions devoted to elements of the Japanese aesthetic and the South wing presenting pieces of the Sassanian, Persian, Egyptian, Roman and Chinese Empires. One of the most notable items in its possession is a Second Century AD standing Buddha from Pakistan, which is one of the largest surviving of its kind.

  Interesting building and great surrounding. The exhibition not great.

  If you're a fan of architecture this is a good place to visit. The mixture between a smoewhat modern take of architecture and nature is amazing. Although the place itself is great, it's a bit difficult to reach as there's only one bus that goes there as far as I know. Also, the exhibits are not the main attraction in the museum in my opinion. Overall it's a great experience and there are a lot of great places to take photos.

  Really enjoyed our visit here, though it requires a commitment in time and money to enjoy it's beauty. We were lucky that the cherry blossoms where in bloom. What a spectacular walk then up through the blossoms into the tunnel and out onto the bridge. Museum was equally good. We enjoyed the Noh mask exhibit. Then the remaining rooms.
