  • Overview You can't Edit

    Users Assigned: Shimizu77
Kiyomizu temple is one of Kyoto's oldest, is so popular that on Sundays it offers all the serenity of rush hour at Kyoto's garish new station. But don't let that put you off.

Founded in 788 just before the city entered its golden age as the imperial capital its numerous buildings nestle lovingly against steep Mt. Higashiyama in a dramatic cascade of thatched and tiled roofs. However, most of what we see today is actually a 17th-century reconstruction of the original 8th-century structure.

With its numerous buildings set within extensive grounds Kiyomizu’s main attraction is the hondo (main hall). This elevated structure’s projecting wooden terrace is supported by a vast arrangement of 139 massive interlocking beams.

Across on the mountainside is another terrace on which imperial courtiers and dignitaries would sit, while enjoying dance performance and music recitals on the hondo’s broad terrace.

The popular expression "To jump from Kiyomizu's terrace" means to do something daring and adventurous, although this is best left to the imagination.

Crowds flock here to take in the bright yet delicate hues of cherry blossoms in spring or the blaze of red and gold maple leaves in autumn, with special night-time illuminations (check at any tourist office, or the website for dates and times).

Sanjusangendo known as the "Hall of 33 Bays." The original temple was built in around 1164 and survived only about a hundred years. What you see today is a reconstruction which is still very old as it dates from the thirteenth century.

Its centrepiece is a ornate wood statue of the seated Kannon Bodhisattva. 3.3 m (11 f0 high, with 11 faces on the crown of its head and 40 arms (extravagantly known as "a thousand arms") wielding bells, wheels, and lotus flowers.

However Sanjusangendo's main wonder is its legion of 1.000 gilded Kannon images flanking the central Buddha. The identical statues were carved by the 13th-century masters Kokei, Unkei. and Tankei, with 70 assistants.

        • The temple is mainly coloured yellow and the views looking out over Kyoto are amazing! There are many small shrines located near the main building, including two "love stones". You can also drink from the pure spring water from which the temple gets its name. The shrines unfortunately suffers from it's own popularity; You can hardly move with all the people who are visiting! While I visited the whole main building was also covered by a brown tarp as it was under renovation
        • Well needless to say, a worthy visit for my trip. Go early morning was great for me. Quiet road, few people, nobody got in my shots. Of course unless you love to shop around then by all means go after 10 when most of shops opened, enjoy some food, and grabbing little souvenirs.
        • One of the busy, but nice temples to visit. behind the temple is the Otowa waterfalls. Sometimes a line to drink the water. 3 sprouts and they all represent different things.
        • This was undoubtedly one of my favorite temples in Kyoto. The front gates make for great photos, but the real spectacle is at the top of the hill on the mountainside. It is a bit of a hike, so plan accordingly. The view of the temple and mountainside you get at the top is definitely worth it though. Also, souvenirs here are very reasonable so stock up!
        • The place is under renovation and still full of crowds. Yet it means this place is among the most popular and special. Get there early to beat the crowd. Besides i was here in Feb18 and its closed at night. Ive read on the internet this is a great place to hang out at night but not. Every things closed after 6pm. Not sure if theres any change during the cherry blossom time...
