  The Fushimi-Inari Shrine is in southern Kyoto. It is a shrine to the Shinto rice deity Inari. It is the most famous and important Inari shrine in the land.
  
  The city of Kyoto can be said to be overflowing with "must-see" places, but this is one place almost certain to use up any superlative descriptions that you might have in your tired-out lexicon.

• Rengeoin Sanjusangendo

  Sanjusangendo known as the "Hall of 33 Bays." The original temple was built in around 1164 and survived only about a hundred years. What you see today is a reconstruction which is still very old as it dates from the thirteenth century.
  
  Its centrepiece is a ornate wood statue of the seated Kannon Bodhisattva. 3.3 m (11 f0 high, with 11 faces on the crown of its head and 40 arms (extravagantly known as "a thousand arms") wielding bells, wheels, and lotus flowers.
  
  However Sanjusangendo's main wonder is its legion of 1.000 gilded Kannon images flanking the central Buddha. The identical statues were carved by the 13th-century masters Kokei, Unkei. and Tankei, with 70 assistants.

• Kyoto National Museum

  You will have found one of Japan's greatest assemblage of paintings and sculptures in the Kyoto National Museum.

  Additionally you can view traditional amour and weapons from over 10 centuries of tradition.  If noh theatre is your thing then the costumes and masks used in these performances will be of interest.
  
  Most of the items (which are without-peer in Japan) on display have been gleaned from temples & palaces in Kyoto, Nara, and other important cultural centres.

• Kiyomizu-dera

  Kiyomizu temple is one of Kyoto's oldest, is so popular that on Sundays it offers all the serenity of rush hour at Kyoto's garish new station. But don't let that put you off.
  
  Founded in 788 just before the city entered its golden age as the imperial capital its numerous buildings nestle lovingly against steep Mt. Higashiyama in a dramatic cascade of thatched and tiled roofs. However, most of what we see today is actually a 17th-century reconstruction of the original 8th-century structure.
  
  With its numerous buildings set within extensive grounds Kiyomizu’s main attraction is the hondo (main hall). This elevated structure’s projecting wooden terrace is supported by a vast arrangement of 139 massive interlocking beams.
  
  Across on the mountainside is another terrace on which imperial courtiers and dignitaries would sit, while enjoying dance performance and music recitals on the hondo’s broad terrace.

• Nishi Honganji Shoin

  There is a lot to see here in Nishi-Honganji. This is one of the best examples Buddhist monumental architecture in Japan; it combines a heroic, dramatic silhouette and with lavish decoration.
  
  These 17th-century buildings were constructed with materials brought from Fushimi Castle which was the property of Hideyoshi. This was originally on the southern side of Kyoto and was dismantled by a Tokugawa shogun in the 1630s.

  Leave early in the morning if you want to avoid the tour groups!!! BEST ADVICE for this place. We left at 6AM to reach here for the opening and was maybe the best idea we had during this visit. As soon as we arrived, we had peace and quiet and the visit was relaxing and calm. We managed to get many good photos capturing the beauty of all the pillars. Its amazing how the light from the sun makes every corner of this place light up! It went all downhill around 10AM (as we were leaving). Hordes of people, tour groups mainly arrived and the quietness went straight out the window! Luckily, we were leaving at this point, and even getting out of this place was stressful, as we had to navigate between crowds to reach freedom. I cannot emphasise to how horrible it was, the tourists were loud, littering, and making the narrow archways blocked. A 5-minute journey to the exit will take you 20 minutes. Be prepared! This place is definitely a place you should visit if you are around the area, it is one of my highlights from Japan…. Just remember……VISIT EARLY and AVOID tourists! It is the best advice anyone can give about this place! Oh, and bring insect repellent, ended up with bite marks all over!

  The great place and must be visited when in Kyoto. It's easy to find this historical place. Only 2 stations from Kyoto Station and it's about 5 minutes by train. Fushimi Inari is open 24 hours so it's better if you come in early morning to avoid super crowded of the tourist. The main attraction is The Tori Gates but you can also enjoy the other beautiful view by walk up to the top of mountain. It 's interesting

  Must-visit place in Kyoto. If you want to fully experience the place, be sure to allocate at least half a day (there is lots of walking; even the walk from the train station is long). There are various trails you can take, but you don't have to go all the way to the top of the mountain for the best experience. Walking through the forest and seeing the various shrines create a tranquil experience. Vending machines and regreshments are located along the way.

  Definitely have to go back here again sometime! We were only for 1 1/2 hours here just around noon. Someone suggests to come here early in the morning and spend some hours here for the trail. Then at noon head out to the alley north outside of the shrine complex to find a lot of eatery stalls with so many variations of yummy street food! I'll be back!

  Deceptively mountain-y. Beautiful shrines. Gorgeous forest. The Tori are beautiful and the sheer amount of them is mind-blowing. The path is made of stone and is essentially nothing but shallow steps up the mountain to the shrine at the top. If you're not used to hiking somewhat steep terrain the path up can be quite tiresome. There are many other shrines between the base and the top where you can rest to catch your breath of you need it. During summer there are some restaurants open as well. There are also a couple of vending machines with water, soda, coffee, tea, sports drinks, and red bull. The views of Kyoto are beautiful. The grounds are open 24/7 but I do recommend arriving before it gets dark so you can ring the bell at the base before you ascend the mountain.
