Just outside of Las Angeles and bordering Orange County, Long Beach is one of the more famous California beach cities in the southern region of the state. Technically part of the greater Los Angeles metropolitan area, Long Beach is nevertheless its own unique breed of awesome, and there’s a reason the place is as well-known as Malibu, Miami Beach, and others.

A city of extremes, with one of the most culturally-diverse atmospheres of any city in the United States, Long Beach can be both amazing and shocking, all at the same time, depending on where you are, who you are, and what you are looking to see. Like all cities, there is an ugly underbelly, but it’s fairly easy to ignore when looking at the overall scope of the city.

Long Beach is one of the most important port cities in the world. Technically, Long Beach isn’t really your first choice when it comes to tourist destinations, but considering its central location it makes it ideal for branching out into the rest of the southern section of the state. The reason it’s not exactly a tourist hotspot is because of the lack of beaches and resorts. Instead, the city trades its fun-in-the-sun for technology, and is a leader in the aerospace and high-tech industries, with companies like Boeing and Verizon being major businesses. And while the beaches aren’t as good as some of the others in California, there are some available, although the majority of cultural and artistic things to see and do in Long Beach are within the interior of the city itself, and with a fairly decent public transportation system compared to other cities in the US, seeing them is fairly easy.

From taking a ride on the historic Queen Mary ocean liner to wandering through the Earl Burns Miller Japanese Garden or taking in Naples Island, Long Beach definitely has more to offer than one would first assume, but it takes some digging to unearth the hidden wonders.
