  • History You can't Edit

    Users Assigned: Shimizu77
Toji was established just after the imperial capital moved to Kyoto in 794, built with wood from the sacred Mt. Inari in the south.

Thirty years later Kukai, the revered founder of esoteric Shingon Buddhism, was appointed head abbot.

The temple complex quickly became Kyoto’s main center of Shingon Buddhism, which it remains today.

There is a lot to see here in Nishi-Honganji. This is one of the best examples Buddhist monumental architecture in Japan; it combines a heroic, dramatic silhouette and with lavish decoration.

These 17th-century buildings were constructed with materials brought from Fushimi Castle which was the property of Hideyoshi. This was originally on the southern side of Kyoto and was dismantled by a Tokugawa shogun in the 1630s.

Sanjusangendo known as the "Hall of 33 Bays." The original temple was built in around 1164 and survived only about a hundred years. What you see today is a reconstruction which is still very old as it dates from the thirteenth century.

Its centrepiece is a ornate wood statue of the seated Kannon Bodhisattva. 3.3 m (11 f0 high, with 11 faces on the crown of its head and 40 arms (extravagantly known as "a thousand arms") wielding bells, wheels, and lotus flowers.

However Sanjusangendo's main wonder is its legion of 1.000 gilded Kannon images flanking the central Buddha. The identical statues were carved by the 13th-century masters Kokei, Unkei. and Tankei, with 70 assistants.

      • Toji shrine was our first exposure to a Japanese Pagoda- and I’m so happy we were able to find the tallest in Japan! It is very impressive and very old - visitors cannot get access to the pagoda, however, from afar, the structure is magnificent! We were also able to pay our respects next door at the shrine where the monks were writing and teaching and people were coming in and ringing bells, bowing, throwing coins then praying - we came to learn that is what you do when you want to pray for yourself or someone else. They also housed very old, very large wooden statues here that looked like had been saved from a fire. The entire area seemed very old and sacred - I’m so glad we came when it was not too busy. We were able to walk from our hotel - not far from Kyoto Train station. Definitely worth the trip!
      • I am lucky enough to see Toji temple everyday on my way to work. It is truly an amazing piece of architecture. The pagoda is a must see if you are visiting Kyoto and it is still impressive when I get the chance to see it close up. The garden surrounding the temple is very pretty throughout the year and a very good spot to come and see the sakura blossoms during the day or at night. There are several statues housed inside of the buildings and on the 21st of each month there is a huge market. You can buy crafts, clothing, and I have even seen a samurai helmet. This is a must visit if you come to Kyoto and easily accessible from Kyoto station.
      • Whilst you cannot enter the Pagoda itself (limited to a few days a year), it is definitely worth a stroll through the park to visit. It is the largest wooden pagoda in Japan and you really don't appreciate it's stature until you're underneath it.
      • This place has a huge (tall) temple that really stands out. There are some all around once you go in but the main tall one you cant go inside. From the looks of it its really old so im guessing for safety reasons. However its amazing to gaze upon and simply admire the beauty of it and soak in all the history. My wife and i had a great time here even though it was raining.
      • Toji complex is one of the most beautiful sides of the traditional side of Kyoto. It is quite cheap (400¥ per adult) and hides one of the best spots of this city: the Pagoda (the tallest in Japan), and the central buildings, collecting very old and precious Buddha statues, in a wonderful wooden atmosphere. I really suggest to visit this place during the Cherry blossoms or during middle Autumn (end of October-middle November) to enjoy the beautiful colors offered by Nature.
