Grantown on Spey is an Village which was designed by the local landowners, the Grants (hence Grant town) who owned the local Castle Grant. It was designed in a grid format in an area that was previously scrub and marsh, so is easily navigable! Grantown has a small museum that outlines the history of the village which is worth visiting.
The location is pretty spectacular as it is on the banks of the famous Spey River, renowned for its salmon fishing, and on the edge of some beautiful Scots Pine wood that contain the elusive Capercaillie. There is plenty of accommodation including hotels, B&B and self catering. Activities in the area include a Golf Course, Leisure Centre and Craggan Outdoors, which is a multi activity centre. The area is ideal for walkers, birders, golfers and of course, fisherman. There is not a lot for families to do in the immediate area, but Aviemore is a 25 minute drive and there are plenty of attractions there.
Grantown has some really nice shops and cafes, including an antiques emporium, gift shops, walkers shortbread shop as well as a shop selling pet supplies, greengrocer, butcher, hardware, small supermarket and a post office.
The best time to visit would depend on the purpose of your visit, for snowsports the winter and for golf, the summer. So it's an all year town!- 40s
