Overview You can't Edit
Users Assigned: bendeckoThis year 2016/17 we have a new lower base station (looks like a big mushroom) that has been built over and under the existing lower gondola terminal. Contains ticket desks, coffee shop and funky LED maps showing which pistes are open or closed. There are machines you can buy the ski passes from - much faster, no queues and no need to embarrass yourself with your lack of Spanish, Catalan or French. -
Car Parking You can't Edit
Next to the urbanisation of El Tarter and at the base of the gondola is the free car parking areas. Big for Andorra it gets very busy.
There are 3 main areas; the primary one (1-on map) outside the cable car and new offices for Grandvalira, an older one (2-on map) over the river and towards the Llop Gris hotel and the Calbo rental store - this one has a chairlift going up as the most suitable.
And if you drive further up toward Soldeu just about 200metres there is another bridge with access to the nordic hotel, keep going up there are there are overflow car parks (3-on map) with pretty much direct access to the piste - you will have to ski back down just a little way to catch a ride back up, and make sure you come down the correct run, to avoid having to walk back up to where you've parked the car.
A word of warning - don't park too close to the new huge "mushroom" shaped cover for the goldola base unless you prepared for an avalanche of snow as the day warms up. At some point during the day the snow will all come off in a one-er!

Internet, telephone & communications You can't Edit
Users Assigned: redplanettravelbossGrandvalira requires you buy a forfet (ski pass) and on that is printed your personal Wifi Code. You need to enter this into the browser and validate your email. It is then valid for the duration of your stay.
At the Grandvalira Obac "Shadow" complex speeds are good up to 7mbs.

Llop GrisThis hotel is probably about as close as you get to the bottom of the El Tarter piste without actually being on it. Grandvalira Estació de Ski Canillo
One of the six main ski stations in the Grandvalira ski-resort - the others being Grau Roig, Funicamp (from Encamp), Soldeu, Pas de la Casa and El Tarter.
You take the 6 person cable car up from the village itself (not free parking in Canillo). It has a ski school, medical clinic, restaurant complex and large sun terrace with play park.
There are only a couple of pistes terminating here, and a couple of chair-lifts - but the aspect is perfect as it is south facing.

Mirador Roc Del Quer
The Mirador Roc del Quer is an extended platform out into the valley with a sculpture of a bronze man sitting on the end of a girder. Art and engineering combine to make a natural and man made spectacle.
You will have seen it high up above Canillo village if you staying there or skiing there.
Perfect for a morning or afternoon stroll for young and old: 5/10 mins walk from the car park - get a fantastic view of the Canillo valley, or alternatively double-check you still get vertigo.
Certainly open in the summer; check access in winter - the mayor of canillo pronounced that it would be open in winter too, at the opening ceremony - but best to check with these things; heavy snowfall will block the road and access path for sure.

BPConsistently the cheapest petrol station in Andorra. Located on the main CG2 that runs from Spain to France.
Difficult (and dangerous) to access coming south from the France direction, as it's a fast road and you'll have to cross the opposing carriageway to turn left. Large restaurant with several comfy sofas for lounging around on. Council owned building so no pressure from staff, you relax and spend ages here.

Fknikulёr for 5-7 minutes pulls you from the station El Tarter in a place with lots of cafes, a few slides for beginners descent for children in cartoon style with all sorts of balls, etc. Plus then you can go to the ski lifts to the tops of 2 Tosa del Espiolets (2.467m.) And Tosa de la Llosada (2.560m.) To begin numerous black and red slopes and incredible views. ASAP it was likely to rise on top of the other, but I only write about those who had to examine for 2 days. Snow on the slopes all just perfect ... very soft and a lot of ice ... almost nowhere. In general, I liked it, all advise.

Great season, a shame that despite the possibilities of tracks and despite the large number of skiers who choose not to keep it better. 26,27,28 December day the station was quite public, and still have not turned the guns, ice tracks, many stones etc. A pity. I will return and I hope to correct the review

bendeckoRackets (metal spiked strapons onto your boots). Are now sadly banned on the pistes of Grandvalira - there are ways up to the ski station on forest paths however.

Important information posted by Red Planetters that might be useful to know.
- Pal station suffering from intermittent cable car breakdowns. Replacement bus service from La Massana. This bus service is just one bus going up and down. 30min interval.
- There is a devastating shortage of yellow fever vaccine in the US and other countries. This shortage is not expected to be relieved until late 2018. For travel to countries REQUIRING the vaccine - the traveler should search for the vaccine well before departure.
- Andorra Freeriders - Avalanche report from Arcalis on 16.12.17. - A medium to large (for Andorra in recent years) powder slide was triggered by the 3 or 4th person who had hiked from the lift into the large gully / couloir below Pic d'Arcalis (as far as I'm aware no one was hurt)-There will be nothing but ice and rock in there today!) The general Avi risk is listed by authorities as 2/5 today. However, this is a generalised area view and does not fully consider the effect of the extreme winds...
