It might be infamous as the home of an incredible array of tacky English tat (a not entirely undeserved reputation, it has to be said), but the northern seaside resort of Blackpool still draws an incredible 6 million visitors a year, most of them attracted by the selection of arcades, shows, drinking culture and a quick few days sprawled on the sands.

It’s hardly the Spanish Riviera, true, but Blackpool does have its charms, not least: the Blackpool Tower (an aging copy of The Eiffel Tower which hosts regular events, and is the undisputed symbol of Blackpool), the Pleasure Beach (an oversized fairground featuring everything from traditional donkey rides to supersized rollercoasters) and three different piers, each with their own unique character. Blackpool's famous sea-front also boasts traditional trams, horse-drawn carriages and a huge Sea-Life Centre, with a stunning glass ceiling walk-through shark aquarium - where you can stare a shark straight in the eye, an eerie and intriguing experience.

The tourist 'tat' that Blackpool is so well known for is down to the town’s notoriously old-school take on tourism, with everything from ‘kiss me quick’ hats to traditional ‘rock’ – a solid, flaky form of candy – dominating the high streets. Look a little harder and you’ll find the sleazier side aimed at stag parties and barely-legal drinkers, such as ball dresses for the drunken man, and plastic breasts.

It’s not all about the sleazy side, though you might find it more than a little hard to avoid. Blackpool’s other draws include a range of stage shows (though some of these tend to be pretty trashy, too), the surprisingly beautiful sight of six miles of sea front illuminations and a frankly ludicrous array of ‘chippies’, selling Britain’s traditional seafood dish, battered Cod or Haddock served with chunky French fries. Gambling is another major pastime here: Blackpool is hardly Vegas, but if you feel like flitting away your earnings in a backstreet casino, you will be find yourself well catered for.

True, it’s far from classy, but Blackpool is a working class side of Britain that still attracts mainly domestic tourists, and is worth a trip – if only a day trip – to see an entirely different side of the UK’s culture, a far cry from the more high-brow outlook of spots like London and Oxford. Arrive in Blackpool with a sense of humor, and you’ll have as good a time as anywhere.

      • Liverpool
As the city that bought you The Beatles, that accent (if you’re not British, you can probably forget about understanding much of the native tongue) and the notorious harbor TV weather map (invaded at various times by everything from a stripper to a full on gale force storm), Liverpool is a city of fun. Masses and masses of fun.

When Liverpool’s long-derided (yet exceptionally talented) football team finally won something in modern times – the European Champions League no less – in 2005, Liverpool was validated, with the city erupting after the skillful but inconsistent team recovered from a 3-0 half time deficit to beat AC Milan on penalties. The win was arguably the defining moment of Liverpool’s recent history, with the city’s two soccer rivals still drawing mammoth crowds week in week out. A real essential local experience.

If you’re not into your sport, check out the sights that made Liverpool the European capital of culture in 2008, such as the Beatles Museum, a fans eye view of the band resplendent with memorabilia (but don’t expect any of the bad side to come out – Yoko Ono and drugs are relegated to the small print). The Maritime Museum gives a taste of what made Liverpool great, while the Gothic influences of Liverpool Cathedral make for a stark kind of beauty against the city skyline. Don’t forget to tour the two football clubs, either, if you have the slightest love of the beautiful game…

Another Liverpool reputation revolves around nightlife, which is notoriously raucous. Even most locals would agree that the scene is ‘the opposite of classy’, being rammed with dive bars and the kind of rampaging clubs that will seem surreal through the haze that is the next morning. Who knows, after enough pints you might even manage to translate that unique local twang.

It might be more rough and ready then cultural gem, but it’s the lively side of Liverpool’s culture that make it so appetizing. Get into the thick of the action to understand why this northern city provokes such unrestrained passion.

Liverpool has seen a lot of investment in recent years, particularly around the famous newly revamped waterfront area. 'Liverpool One' is a new shopping and leisure complex, a brand new museum, pier head building, the 'Echo Arena' is a new concert venue and many new striking hotels and luxury apartment buildings blend a new skyline with with the old familiar architecture.
