Overview You can't Edit
Users Assigned: KazmiAlexandria, Virginia, is an independent city of Virginia. (Not in any county.) The city was founded in the mid-18th century as a tobacco, cotton, and trading seaport on the Potomac River. For a period of time, the city was a part of the District of Columbia, until returned to Virginia in 1846. During the Civil war, Alexandria was occupied by Federal forces as part of the defenses of Washington, DC. Today's Alexandria is a integral part of the Northern Virginia and Washington metropolitan region. Alexandria is a convenient base for the traveler visiting Washington, DC, and has historical sites of its own to see.
Famous residents have included George Washington and Robert E. Lee, who grew up in the city. Old Town, the city's historic core, preserves Colonial and Federal townhouses and many historic buildings and museums. There are also shops, restaurants and an active nightlife to be found along Old Town's brick streets. The Potomac river taxi also docks here and will take you to either Georgetown, DC or Mount Vernon, VA.

National HarborThe National Harbor is a new and expansive 300 acre development off the Potomac River. It has been here since 2008. This urban waterfront community hosts hotels, residential buildings, a marina, restaurants, bars, a mechanical bull, shopping and stores including a Peeps store (you know, the marshmallow treat made into chicks and bunnies for the holidays).
Only 10 minutes drive from downtown DC and just across the Potomac from Old Town, Virginia, the National Harbor is technically in Prince George's county of Maryland. You can get there via water taxi from Virginia, via the Beltway, you can cross the new Woodrow Wilson bridge from VA or drive there via 295 from DC.
There is something for everyone at the National Harbor. Parking ranges from $3-$11 unless you park at the Gaylord National Hotel and Convention Center (parking is more expensive there). Mount VernonMount Vernon, Virginia, is a community in eastern Fairfax County. It is most famous for being the location of the Mount Vernon estate, the home of George Washington. For the most part, Mount Vernon is now a suburban community, but with a keen sense of history.
