Wales (or Cymru, in the magical Welsh language) has long been famed for it’s fierce national pride and rugged beauty. From a passion for the national sport of rugby to ample wide, open countryside perfect for hiking, adventure sports or climbing, Wales is a little country with a big, big heart.

Capital and formerly industrial city Cardiff has undergone a facelift in recent years, and is now home to a world-class stadium, swish city centre and even some artistic docklands, a far cry from the rough-edged city of former times. There’s still that fun-loving vibe so famed amongst the Welsh people, though, and a notable cultural split from the rest of the UK.

Head into the countryside and you’ll find that split still more marked: in the soaring mountains (including the spectacular Mount Snowdon) and rambling trails of the countryside you’ll find tiny, ivy-strewn hamlets with near-mystical vibes, and locals tucked away in 50s country clubs in the heart of the valleys.

Head north or west and you’ll find some of the UK’s most alluring coastlines, with rustic beaches and sedate seaside villages. Caernarfon and Conwy offer a historic tinge, with a tourist-luring castle and medieval edge respectively. Swansea, Newport and Bangor make up the nation’s other major cities. Swansea and Aberystwyth are both home to substantial, party-loving student populations & beautiful untouched beaches. Not to mention the Gower peninsula, Britains first area of outstanding beauty.

Welsh tradition associates the country with the dragon, and has stood proud against various invaders and established its own sense of tradition. This includes Europe’s largest annual folk festival, the Eisteddfod, which takes place in a different town every August and celebrates Wales’s unique literary and cultural heritage. If you don’t happen to be around in the autumn, though, it’s best to head for the countryside and indulge in the charming, atmospheric feel of a culture that still has its own language in its more remote corners, and evokes passion for the nation and its tumultuous history around every rural corner.
