• Ginkakujicho

  Ginkakuji, the know as the famous "Silver Pavilion". It was original conceived to have a silver-leaf covering, but it never received it.  
  
  The place was constructed in the fifteenth century by Yoshimasa Ashikaga (an aesthete-mystic shogun) whose use for it was to host esoteric tea ceremonies where the highlight of the event was moon-watching from the elegant gardens.
  
  If you see something that looks like Mt Fuji - it is actually a pile of white gravel that was left over from the construction - still it is a fun, possibly apocryphal story!

• 哲学の道

  Philosopher's Path is found at the northern edge of Higashiyama and is one of Japan's most famous and delightful short walks; stretching along a canal running between two major temples—Nanzenji and Ginkakuji.

• Kofukuji

  Often overlooked by visitors, but worth a visit: Kompukuji is a dry landscape garden with a steep bank of azaleas, this temple is affiliated with the Rinzai school of Zen, but also has literary associations with two of Japan's greatest haiku master: Basho and Buson.

• Zenrinji(Eikan-do)

  The Etkan do is an exquisite temple set against the hillside. Its beautiful Amida Buddha statue is, unusually turning to look back over its shoulder.
  
  Its strange posture commemorates a legendary statue that came to life and then berated Eikan, the astonished monk looking on for pausing from his ritual chanting.
  
  Every autumn you can see special night illuminations of the flaming red and orange of the maple trees, highlighted by spotlight.

  The effect can only be described as sublime and exceptional.

• Heian Shrine

  A huge arch (torii) spanning the main road marks the approach to the Heian Shrine. This popular shrine features a strongly Chinese-influenced design and an extensive landscaped garden considered one of Kyoto's finest, with numerous cherry trees and a large pond with an elegant pagoda linked to the shore by a covered bridge.

• Kyoto Imperial Palace

  The present buildings are a 1800s reconstruction; the original 8th-century Imperial Palace was destroyed in one of Kyoto's fires which ravaged the previous buildings.

  As you pass through the Seishomon Gate on the western side you will enter the Shishinden ceremonial hall. Here emperors are enthroned this is a privilege retained by the city of Kyoto even after the move to Tokyo, and it is where New Year's audiences are also held.

• Nanzen-ji Temple

  Nanzenji was a 13th-century palace which contains 12 temples and monasteries.
  
  The impressive main entrance was constructed in 1628. There is a notorious local story where a robber known as Goemon lshikawa was boiled alive at this site in an huge iron cauldron.  In order to save his son he held him aloft to keep him from suffering the same fate.
  
  Since then, old-fashioned Japanese iron bathtubs have been gruesomely known as “goemon-buro."

  My husband and I visited the property earlier this morning and I would highly recommend signing up if you're in the area. Be sure to sign up online a few days in advance as there is a specific selection process that takes a few days (and is not guaranteed). Our group was about 30 people in size and the tour was in Japanese but we received free headsets that gave us the necessary information in English. The grounds are beautiful and it was fun to imagine what the views and property would of looked like when emperors and princesses visited this area hundreds of years ago. Was a very nice way to spend the morning and the tour lasted about 80minutes. Mostly easy walking terrain with minimal uphill and well worth it overall!

  I booked my tour the day beforehand at the office of the Imperial Household Agency. It all went very smoothly. The Shugakuin Imperial Villa is a bit far from downtown Kyoto, but well worth the trip. The villa’s and gardens itself are amazing. The view that the site grants over the city itself is stunning. Walking through this place gave me a wonderful insight into the luxuries of old Japanese nobility and as such is a great cultural experience.

  One of the best gardens I've visited in Japan! I've wanted to visit one of the imperial villas in Kyoto for some time but the online bookings are go very quickly. Thanks to another google reviewer pointing out that there are slots in the afternoon tours (1:30 and 3:00) are available on a first come first served bases I was able to visit. The tour is in Japanese, but you can borrow an earphone guide for free in several languages and lasts about 1 hour 20 minutes. In order to apply for the tour you'll need your passport or a residency card. You visit 3 different areas on the tour with the final area a spectacular walk around a lake.

  I highly recommend this tour of the breathtaking Shugakuin Imperial Villa. The tour is approximately one hour with a Japanese guide but audio tours are available in English and Chinese. Please be aware that this is a reservation only tour which must be done prior online. Otherwise you can wait for an availability on the spot for the afternoon slots.

  Very much worth it and Free, BUT: it can only be visited with a tour. Tours in the morning NEED to be reserved, tours in the afternoon can be joined on the spot. Only 2 afternoon tours available, so check out their schedule online!! Gardens are splendid, and the villas and history totally worth your time.
