Sengakuki is a temple that evokes one of the most popular stories in all of premodern Japanese history.

  • Background You can't Edit

    Users Assigned: Shimizu77
In 1701 a young provincial baron named Asano Takumi no Kami, morally insulted by a court official named Kira, attacked and wounded his tormentor.

Asano’s was ordered to commit suicide for this offense; however, Kira went free. Asano’s clan steward, Oishi Kuranosuke, and forty-seven of his loyal retainers vowed revenge. On the night of 14 December 1702, despite many obstacles, they attacked Kira’s heavily guarded villa on the east side of Sumida River, cut off his head and brought it in triumph to Asano’s tomb at Sengakuji, the family temple.

This was a dilemma for the Tokugawa government. On one hand their revenge was perfectly in accord with the samurai code of honor; on the other they had murdered a high official. Eventually. Oishi and his band were also ordered to commit suicide; this they did, and they were buried at Sengakuji with their lord.

Celebrated in Kabuki theater, film, and television the store has had an abiding hold on the imagination of the Japanese people.

        • An amazing place. Words do not do it justice. If you like history and a true story of Bushido this is a place like no other. The best time to venture out here is in February when they pay honour to the loyal 47 Ronin.
        • A lovely temple to visit, beautiful, serene and humbling. The museum is small but the admission is cheap so worth doing. Definitely recommended to anyone staying in Takanawa, or even vaguely near.
        • A little temple between buildings, silent and almost desert. Few people arrives here, to the place of rest for the 47 ronin.
        • This is the resting place of the famous 47 Ronin. A very tranquil place with all the graves placed according to their living quarters.
        • If you love Japanese Culture and history, this is a must see. If you want a calm, serene temple, also a good choice.
