  • Overview You can't Edit

    Users Assigned: Shimizu77

If you must visit only one of the two imperial villas in Kyoto the Katsura is the ultimate "must see" in a city full of them.

Meticulously planned, Katsura is a Japanese masterpiece of residential design and garden landscaping subtlety.

Every wall in the villa's 7 pavilions is a panel that can be slide open to view the surrounding landscape, including the gardens and also the Arashiyama Hills which are found beyond them.

      • Nishi Honganji Shoin

There is a lot to see here in Nishi-Honganji. This is one of the best examples Buddhist monumental architecture in Japan; it combines a heroic, dramatic silhouette and with lavish decoration.

These 17th-century buildings were constructed with materials brought from Fushimi Castle which was the property of Hideyoshi. This was originally on the southern side of Kyoto and was dismantled by a Tokugawa shogun in the 1630s.

      • Nijo Castle Ninomaru palace
Nijo Castle is a poignant monument to the ironic twists of history. Built by ieyasu Tokugawa in 1603 for his occasional, reluctant visits to Kyoto (under imperial command), the castle was taken over by the Emperor Meiji after the restoration of 1868. It was here that the emperor signed the edict abolishing the shogunate and sent his carpenters round the castle to replace the Tokugawa hollyhock crest with the imperial chrysanthemum.

      • Ryōan-ji
Ryoanji is certainly the best known of all Zen Buddhist temples.

Its famous rock garden has sparked more debates - both admirers and critics - than the fragments of gravel in its rectangular length of 30 m by 10 m (98 ft. By 32 ft).

There are no tires or bushes. Only 15 bare rocks adorned with ancient moss, forming clusters in the middle of white gravel which is perfectly raked.

Although generally attributed to the great master Soami, no one knows for sure who created it, or why.

The mystery surrounding its origins does nothing to undermine the power of its simplicity.

Interpretation that confuses, personifies the essence of the essentially anti-intellectual precepts of Zen Buddhism.

Kyoto doesn't offer any more memorable experiences than this: The isolated contemplation of Ryoanji's enigmatic rock garden.

      • Rengeoin Sanjusangendo

Sanjusangendo known as the "Hall of 33 Bays." The original temple was built in around 1164 and survived only about a hundred years. What you see today is a reconstruction which is still very old as it dates from the thirteenth century.

Its centrepiece is a ornate wood statue of the seated Kannon Bodhisattva. 3.3 m (11 f0 high, with 11 faces on the crown of its head and 40 arms (extravagantly known as "a thousand arms") wielding bells, wheels, and lotus flowers.

However Sanjusangendo's main wonder is its legion of 1.000 gilded Kannon images flanking the central Buddha. The identical statues were carved by the 13th-century masters Kokei, Unkei. and Tankei, with 70 assistants.

        • Amazing place. The best garden design i have seen in Japan. Absolutely worth booking a time to visit here if you are travelling in Kyoto. The walk around gives very different atmospheres in the different parts of the garden. The guide was great but he spoke just a little too loudly. Making it very hard to hear our audio guides in English, other than this small issue the trip was perfect. The history of the place is worth briefly reading up on too.
        • One of the prettiest Japanese gardens. Best time to visit is in autumn when all the maple trees are red; however, in order to do so, you need to book the reservation 6 months in advance. The Villa was constructed for moon viewing so a lot of elements there are conductive to that. We visited at 3 pm on a winter day so the sun was setting slightly. The tour is in Japanese but you have to option of getting the English self-guided one.
        • A so beautiful Villa, with a nice parc, place around. The view from the last floor of the Villa is beautiful. Recommended, also for the visit of the Villa & his history
        • Only with tour, which is about everything but not the villa building itself. You also couldn't see the inside (even from the outside), so I was a bit disappointed
        • Very beatiful and delicated emperor's garden. Emperor do not allow kids younger than 18 years old to visit and enjoy his garden. Emperor's wisdon always keeps me impressed!
