Users Assigned: KazmiIf Stuttgart has one fixation, it’s cars. Home to huge museums showcasing two of the world’s most well-known sports car brands, Mercedes and Porsche, the city has a deep love of mechanical beauty, with the museums showcasing nearly 250 important models between them, and the spectacular Nurburgring – a hefty trip across the German countryside – considered a more than worthwhile weekend trip (the full circuit has a lap record of nearly eight and a half minutes, which should give an idea of the length and scale of the challenge).
The city sits in the heart of Germany’s most popular wine-producing district, and the ample vineyards make for another interesting aside, but the impressive architecture – both ancient and modern – makes Stuttgart city itself a great place to spend time. There are a host of impressive, fairytale-style castles and palaces, such as the 18th century Castle Favorite and the stunning white patterns of the Solitude Palace, located in the forests to the West of Stuttgart.
The Television Tower, a 217 meter beast sat on a hill over the city, is the model on which many future worldwide television towers were based, and is arguably the symbol of modern Stuttgart. A pricey restaurant sits at the top, as well as views that take in sights that stretch to the Alps on a good day, and give a perfect panoramic view of the city and the surrounding valleys.
If you prefer to indulge in a bit of sensual luxury, spas and a world-class opera scene give visitors the chance to kick back in style, while those with money to splurge will love Breuninger, a shopping center that’s absolutely crammed full of designer labels and boutique stores. Throughout the year, several impressive festivals bring the city to life, too, including a wine village, beer festival, and those traditional German Christmas markets that draw such heady international acclaim.
As a modern, lively city with an artistic edge and a real love of all things high-end, Stuttgart can be a pricey place to go, but its also a charming one, and you won’t feel out of place backpacking and window shopping or cruising in your Ferrari.
