The palm-strewn streets of the South Florida city of Miami are hardly the American norm. Miami, with its large Hispanic influences is a refreshing alternative and at times bizarre take on life. Miami sometimes feels like an entirely different continent. Perhaps it’s something about the regular hurricanes, or the at times drenching humidity, buts there’s something about this corner of the USA. Miami livened everyone up, propped them in classic Cadillacs and got them playing with the local alligators in a testosterone fuelled exploits..

You couldn’t visit Miami without going to a beach, and strolling amongst the bikini-clad locals, or hiring rollerblades and stumbling clumsily along the seafront. Away from the sandy shores, though, there’s a surprising variety of natural beauty to be unveiled. Cruise around the musty everglades keeping an eye out for supersized alligators, enjoy Florida Key’s sun-stroked sand bars, or head to the mangroves and enjoy the Caribbean sun from yet another hot spot.

If you’re into your fashionable little things, Fort Lauderdale’s the place to be, though you’ll pay through the nose for it. Bring your designer labels and don’t forget to pout. A quieter take on Miami is on offer in the downtown bars, though not much quieter, while you can go full pelt at the South Beach’s leery night spots.

The cultural variety of a city so close to both Mexico and the Caribbean is alluring in itself, and can be discovered round nearly every corner, in the products on sale, as well as venues like the Cuban or Black Heritage Museums, and tourist draws like the magnificent home of Bacardi.

If you’re into theme parks, the Seaquarium, where whales and dolphins glide around an astonishing tropical paradise, is spectacular, while heading over to Disneyland in Orlando is a key part of most visitors’ trips. If you’re planning on staying a while, pick up a GoMiami card, which will get you on an airboat ride, into the zoo and even onto Jungle Island at a bargain basement per day price.

Make the most of soaking up a city that’s drenched in rays and vibrant street culture, where you can get a toned-down taste of just what it is to experience the real world ‘Scarface’. Sunny, lively, and ranging from old-world alligator wrestling rough to intensely fashionable hubs, Miami is just different, and different is rarely a bad thing, especially if you're traveling in country. You’ll love it.

    • South Beach
South Beach is the section of Miami Beach, Florida that encompasses the southernmost 23 blocks of an island separating the Atlantic Ocean and Biscayne Bay.

Today, the South Beach section of Miami Beach is a major entertainment destination with hundreds of nightclubs, restaurants and oceanfront hotels. The large number of European tourists explains South Beach's tolerance of topless sunbathing, despite being a public beach. Another unique aesthetic attribute of South Beach is the several colorful and unique lifeguard stands, still used today by South Beach's lifeguards.

South Beach has a very active club and bar scene. It is host to over 150 clubs and other destinations, most of which close at 5 am. South Beach can be expensive, and access to nightclubs is often difficult for non-locals who do not have connections, or do not plan their evenings in advance. Access to the more popular nightspots can cost anywhere from $20-60 for entry (depending on event and venue) and sometimes comes with a wait of several hours, in addition to evaluation by door staff.

Nightlife in South Beach is dynamic and ever-changing, although some watering holes like The Clevelander and Mac's Club Deuce have remained steadfast tourist destinations on Ocean Drive for well over a decade. Clubs constantly change decor, name, and owner, so it is difficult to state at any given time which clubs are popular.

    • Miami Beach
Technically a barrier island connected to the mainland by a series of bridges, Miami Beach is nevertheless a city all by itself. It has stood as one of the premier beach resorts in the United States for nearly a century, and between its Art Deco buildings, its world-famous nightclubs, its Latin American culture, and the sun and sand, it is extremely easy to see why this is such a favorite place for so many. However, keep in mind that the very nature of Miami Beach screams premier and exclusive, so the rates can be somewhat shocking during the peak winter months. This is definitely not a budget destination, although if you head there in the low season when tourism has dropped off the rates are significantly lower, and in the current economical times you can find better deals than in the past.

Probably the most popular and well-known part of Miami Beach is South Beach, which is an area known to millions for its prominence in movies and books over the years. It is fun-in-the-sun year-round, which is one of the main reasons that it has remained so popular, giving people access to the beaches no matter the season. But beyond the beach itself you can explore the various surfing opportunities, head out onto the water for some snorkeling, or you can take one of the guided nature tours that include kayaking and snorkeling, as well as canoe trips up some of the mangrove creeks.

There are also several guided bike tours for people looking to cycle their way around the island, or you can hoof it on foot. Miami Beach is also one of the few places in the United States that offers visitors access to nude beaches, although they are private in nature so you won’t be able to gawk unless you are man (or woman!) enough to bare it all with the rest of the people.

    • Hollywood
Characterized by quaint sidewalk cafés, bricklined walks and six blocks of unique boutiques, shops, art galleries and dozens of excellent restaurants along Hollywood Boulevard and Harrison Street, the pedestrian-friendly environment is the perfect place to enjoy South Florida. Just minutes from the beach, the downtown district is on the National Register of Historic Places and is the backdrop for year-round festivals, street markets and entertainment.

Feed your hunger for the arts at the Art and Culture Center of Hollywood. Here, modern art exhibitions and progressive dance and musical performances reflect Hollywood’s devotion to the creative spirit.

If it’s nightlife you crave, nobody does it better. Get a taste of South Florida’s international music and culture that include live jazz, blues, rock, Latin and R&B.

In the heart of Downtown, the ArtsPark at Young Circle offers a vast, 10-acre playground for people of all ages.

Hollywood’s oceanfront Broadwalk offers miles of car-free enjoyment. Walkers, runners, bicyclists and rollerbladers set their own pace on this path, which is bordered by six miles of Hollywood’s famous coastline, boutique hotels, charming shops, cafés and places to eat facing the ocean
