Users Assigned: Shimizu77If Tokyo can be said to have any center at all, this is it. Today’s Imperial Palace is on the site of Edo castle, where the Tokugawa shogunate ruled Japan for 265 years; it was thereafter home to the emperors of the modern era.
The palace was almost totally destroyed in the air raids of World War II, then rebuilt in ferroconcrete. This is the least interesting part of what was once the largest system of fortifications in the world, and in any case you can’t get in to see it.
What you can see are the lovely grounds of the East Garden, the moat and massive stone ramparts, and those few examples of classic Japanese architecture – gates bridges armories, and watchtowers – that have survived since the 17th century. -

Users Assigned: Shimizu77The imperial family still resides in the palace, so the general public is admitted to the grounds on only two days each year: on 2 January and 23 December. On these occasions, you might find it hard to compete with the many thousands of Japanese visitors who come to pay their respects.
The Imperial Palace’s East Garden is open to the public every day except Monday and Friday. From Otemachi subway station, you enter the gardens at the Otemon Gate and wander through hedgerows of white and pink azaleas, around ponds and little waterfalls edged with pines, plum trees, canary palms, and soft green cryptomeria you catch and occasional glimpse of the skyscrapers of modern Tokyo.
North of the garden, but still enclosed within the palace moat, the densely wooded Kita-no-Maru Park contains the redbrick Craft Gallery. Open every day except Monday, the gallery, housed in a Meiji-era building, is a first-rate introductionto Japanese arts and crafts. Also, within the perk is the Science Museum, with interactive displays and hi-tech exhibits, and the distinctive Nippon Budokan, a martial arts hall.

Users Assigned: Shimizu77If you walk in a clockwise direction around the palace this will bring you in the first instance to the pretty Nijubashi Bridge and then the Seimon Gate, where there is a public entrance to enter the palace's grounds.
You then pass the most prominent of Japan’s modern government buildings, the National Diet (Japan’s parliament) and the Supreme Court. A complete circuit would also include the National Theater, and the National Museum of Modern Art.
With a short detour, you can also take Yasukuni Jinja. Founded in 1869, this is the “Shrine of Peace for the Nation” dedicated to the souls of those who have died for Japan in battle. Besides the main hall and the hall of worship, the shrine complex includes a noh theater stage, a sumo wrestling ring, several teahouses, and the Yushukan museum of war memorabilia.

Historical and with current importance. The place has big gardens with spacious square in front of it to hold big events. This is still the emperor's house and office. It is possible to get in only twice a day in guided tours that requires reservation and with limited places. The visit is free of charge. There is not too much to see. No magnificent architecture or gardens. But historically and politically there is a great meaning. Check the schedules before going. The outside gardens are open and does not require booking.

What a beautifully laid out garden we visited today. The colours were simply amazing and the different areas of the garden delightful. We especially liked the pond area and the orchard. These gardens are free to enter and there is a lovely little shop, plenty of restrooms and you can get a drink from a machine close to the shop. If it's nice weather you could take a picnic and sit on one of the many benches. Note the gardens are closed on a Monday and Friday.

The official residence of the emperor of Japan is a vast complex of buildings that are used by government and the emperor's family to receive overseas guests, host functions as well as residential buildings. For the tourist, there is a guided tour of the gardens which is an absolute highlight of any visit to Tokyo. The plants are sculptured into shapes that are extraordinary. Obviously the best time to visit is Spring, in the cherry blossom season and Autumn when the Japanese maples turn into a blaze of red, orange and brown but they can also be enjoyed at any time.

Great place to visit if you have some good time and can afford to go for a guided tour. Only guided tours are allowed and you cant leave in between. Atleast 2:30 hrs for tour. Otherwise, a great place for a quick 30 min stroll and some clicks only. If in crunch of time, then it may be better to go to other attractions of the Tokyo city.

A beautiful peaceful place. A few hours spent in the gardens despite flowers not being in bloom. Could only imagine how amazing this would have been in its prime. The main palace is only accessible certain times and by appointment. Outside grounds accessible all year around but close at 4.30pm
