    Dortmund is one of the largest cities in the Ruhr District. It grew from a small town into a huge industrial city in the wake of the industrial revolution, with coal mining and steel mills. Since the 1980s, though, coal mining has ceased, the air and waters are now clean, and the whole Ruhr district has transformed thoroughly. Due to World War II the city center consists, like in most cities in the Ruhr district, mostly of post-war architecture. In between there are a couple of old churches which tell of Dortmund's great past as imperial city and member of the Hansa.

    Dortmund's Christmas market is the largest in Germany with about 300 stalls. It fills three squares and the streets in between. For the lovers of superlatives, they also claim to have the largest Christmas tree in the world. It is of course not a real single tree but built as a metal structure that carry lots and lots of little trees. Anyway, it is impressive.

    Dortmund is the seat of a famous and successful soccer team, BVB Borussia Dortmund. Football is almost a religion in this area. You will see a lot of black and yellow stripes in the city, not only on match days. So take care not to cheer for the wrong team. Never wear blue and white stripes, as these are the colors of the neighboring rival Schalke 04...
