As the corner of Texas where modernity and a sometime tragic history bang their heads, Dallas is an odd mish-mash; an exuberant and bordering on brash city self-branded as ‘The Big D’, and home to everything from a presidential assassination to a plethora of wealthy boutiques.

If you’re a fan of history, you’ll no doubt already have debated the Book Depository vs. Grassy Knoll argument on the Kennedy Assassination. Whatever you’re conclusions, you can get a further insight within the modern day Book Depository, where you’ll find an insightful reminder of a day that changed the course of American history, when one of the most popular President’s of all time left us, soon to be followed by his brother.

Dallas, though, has long since recovered, and these days the skyscraper-tinged modernism is so elegant that the city’s become one of the nation’s major business centres, a popular choice for everything from conferences to stylish HQs. The Bank of America and Exxon Mobil both call Dallas home, and with a modern skyline set against a backdrop of the latest in commercial fashion and plenty of hikable greenery, it’s easy to see what makes this part of Texas so liveable.

The Museum of Art plays host to its own Monet originals, the impressive Conspiracy Museum covers everything from Oswald Bailey to Aliens via the moon landing, while the Southfork Ranch – former home of the cult TV series Dallas – brings back curious small screen memories, and is also now host to the gun used in the Kennedy assassination. If you’re a real museum buff, Fair Park hosts half a dozen of them, while there’s also an excellent aquarium and a subtropical Discovery Gardens to enjoy.

Some argue Dallas is soulless. Given the penchant for clinical modernity, it’s even possible to see where the argument comes from, but sports, history and art lovers all beg to differ. Whatever your conclusions, Dallas sheds Texas in a different light to Houston or Austin, and for that reason alone its well worth a visit.

Irving is a suburb, west of Dallas, and is most famous for being the home of Texas Stadium, where the Dallas Cowboys play.

Irving has become a powerhouse for industrial business and lower-end commerce. Big business is slowly moving into Irving bringing with it jobs, restaurants, and housing opportunities. Irving is centrally located on several freeways which lead right into Dallas.
      Irving, TX, USA
    • Mesquite
Mesquite is an eastern suburb of Dallas that is bigger than most people realize. 129,000 people live in the town named after the tree that looks more like a bush. (I can make fun of the name since it's my home town)

Mesquite is a classic North Texas town. Quite conservative. It's politically, religiously, socially and in every way conservative.

The Mesquite Championship Rodeo is the town's claim to fame yet most who live there have probably never been. It's a great tourist event but few of the locals plan their lives around the weekend rodeo.

For years thousands of East Texans have come to Mesquite to shop at Town East Mall. It was the first indoor mall in the country with more than 100 stores. Going back to the 50's Big Town Mall was the place to shop and claims to be the first indoor mall in the nation. It closed a few years back.

The recent "new growth" in Mesquite is to the south and east. Many say that's the region where Jesse James and his gang camped when they were robbing banks and trains in and around Mesquite. Such folk lore can't be proved (or disproved).

It's still not a bad place to raise kids but it's no Hot Spot. Lots of restaurant chains, H.S. Football and shopping. That about sums it up!

    • Grapevine
Grapevine is a city located in Tarrant and Dallas counties. The city is part of the Dallas Fort Worth Statistical Area and its city limits are mostly within the Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport, neighboring cities such as Irving and Coppell.

It has become known for its small local boutiques, wine shops, and street festivals. The city is adjacent to Grapevine Lake, a large reservoir impounded by the Army Corps of Engineers in 1952 and serves as both a source of water and recreational area.
