  As Australia’s sixth most populated city, Gold Coast – a very apt name for the picturesque strip of sand wedged in front of the towering sky scrapers of Queensland’s acclaimed surfing Mecca, which features two international standard annual surfing competitions – is an evitable beach bum draw.
  
  In fact, Gold Coast is an all round sporting haven, with motor racing, golf and all of Australia’s staple sports well represented here. It’s surfing that really dominate the urban scene, though, particularly in the suburb of Surfer’s Paradise, home to what’s widely regarded as one of the best beaches in the world, a stretch of land that hosts everything from a tiki village to a predictably manic nightlife.
  
  Surf you almost certainly will, but to dismiss Gold Coast as nothing more than a sporty resort is to miss a great deal of its allure. Boat trips out to sea allow visitors to gaze in awe as whales launch themselves from the water, while you’ll be able to find your own empty golden stretch amongst more than 70kms of sand. Throw in waterfalls and a backdrop of moist tropical rainforest and it’s easy to see why Queensland has built a reputation for its natural beauty as much as its party-hard, sport-heavy ethos.
  
  With tourism forever on the rise in this part of the world, Gold Coast has also become a center for theme parks, with half a dozen water, outback and movie focused effort cropping up, each worthy of a fun (if expensive) day out. Then there’s Dracula’s haunted house, a creepy and interactive satirical draw in Surfer’s Paradise, as well as Infinity – a quirky and confuddling maze – and the off-shore adrenaline rush that is jet boating. For the more sedate, hot air ballooning and vineyard tours offer a break from the Gold Coast mayhem.
  
  Certainly a city for the adrenaline junky, then, who’ll find themselves gawping and blowing the budget in awe of the sheer variety of thrills served up here, but in truth there are few who won’t find something to love in such a natural striking corner of the world.

• Surfers Paradise

  Surfers Paradise is a stunning strip of coastline that is alive with locals and tourists by day and by night. It has long been the epicentre of the most developed beach resort in Australia, with kilometres of skyscrapers set directly behind the sand.
  
  Aside from the beautiful beaches, this area is prominent for its nightclub scene and easy access to Australia's best theme parks.

  Location could be better as it is next to a highway and it is feeling a little dated but the staff are nice and it's reasonably well set up for events.
