The city of Galveston on Galveston island, is only about an hour drive south of Houston and is a great place for a quick getaway. Do not expect to find the most gorgeous beaches in the world, but the incredible shopping, liveliness of "the Strand" and the famous Moody Gardens, more then make up for it.

Once again I am from Texas so I can say this without any guilt. Galveston use to be amazing place to visit with Sea-Arama (Think Sea World but smaller), the sea wall to skate up and down, cheap shells at the tourist store and the beaches were nice and well maintained. Now the city is a tourist trap lots of hotels, tourist events and themes and the beaches are less than stellar due to the oil spills from Mexico in the 80's. If it is beaches go to South Padre or an hour either direction from Galveston. If it is family entertainment with the kids then Galveston has a great deal to offer and many things to keep the entire family laughing and playing with, on, or around for a week easy. It is not a cheap vacation, on the other hand it has a lot of joy in one location.

Moody gardens (under their glass pyramids) is my highlight with Galveston. Very nice aquatic and rain forest displays; and have an I-Max set. The beaches have no palm trees for shade; but I had fun on the drive on beaches on the far west side of the island. I worked for years on one building of the Fort Crockett complex...a WW2 navy base that was built to withstand naval gunfire. While working there I lived in an apartment by the sea with a balcony getting a view and morning sun.

I worked at Fort Crockett till I retired 10 years ago. I loved Galveston living in a beach side condo with a balcony overlooking the sea. I liked driving on the beach also, but more beaches are being closed to vehicle traffic. Pelican Island is also a part of the City of Galveston with its Seawolf Park with a vintage WW2 destroyer and submarine.

You should know this before you visit...Galveston has a big flooding problem when it rains hard. The Strand is impossible to reach in high water. Both of the main roads into Galveston can have real flooding problems with heavy rain.

        • My sister delivered her baby at this hospital and it was an absolute nightmare for everyone. Not only were the nurses rude and saying that she wasn't even trying to push, they made her push for almost 3 hours and her heart rate was through the roof. Afterward the "doctor" yanked on my sisters umbilical cord and ended up having her uterus prolapse because of this ignorant woman. Afterward we were bombarded with nurses who claimed that it wasn't the doctors fault... so traumatic for my sister! After her surgery for the prolapse she had to lay with her wound open for days, it was horrible to watch. I swore after this altercation I will NEVER recommend this hospital.
        • My husband has been seeing a doctor at UTMB for several years and the billing is always a nightmare. Since we retired and are in Galveston most of the time, I decided to join him and had my first visit with a new doctor, what I call a PHYSICAL but they REFUSED to bill as such so ended up paying over $200 with insurance even though an annual physical is covered by the affordable health care. Then my husband had his first check up after signing up for Medicare for his physical , a flu shot and a pneumonia vaccine and they billed medicare $994.99. What a scam! I signed up for Kelsey so will no longer have to deal with their billing department and plan on complaining to Medicare for my husbands charges. I hope we can all have the fortitude to join in the fight to get health care charges in line!
        • Not sure about the quality of your Medical Students serving in my community... Dr Armando Leonel Martinez is an unprofessional Emergency Medicine Specialist (contractor) working at Rio Grande Regional Hospital Emergency Room (ER). On December 29, 2016 (2:35pm) in the hospital ER, this emergency room physician with less than 7 years of experience was rude and unprofessional. His conduct in treating my father was substandard. His lack of medical knowledge for a simple five minute procedure was extremely evident. Simply, he was incompetent in this medical procedure so we AMA (Against Medical Advice) depart the hospital at about 5pm. And went to the Edinburg Regional Medical Center ER to get the five minute treatment done under 1 hour verse the incomplete six hour treatment at Rio Grande Regional Hospital under his care. I would not recommend this ER doctor to anyone. Do yourself a big favor and seek out another ER doctor on call because maybe they would be of better service. Bottom-line, I have serviced 23 years in the military and I have the uncanny ability to spot individuals who lack character and integrity. Without a doubt, Dr Martinez is heading down the wrong path in his chosen profession while not thinking of his patient First before his Ego. Hoping he makes better decisions in future, Lieutenant Commander Beamsley (U.S. Navy)
        • This is a top-notch hospital, all the way down the line. Friendly helpful staff, treats the patient as well as the family with respect & care. No waiting for help to arrive, or meds to be delivered. I have never been in a hospital this excellent.
        • In January, 2016 I was transported via ambulance from a Medical Center in Bay City, TX to UTMB - Galveston for emergency gall bladder surgery. Upon arrival, I was feeling painless from the excruciating pain I had in Bay City from receiving excellent pain medication. Everyone was very nice and helpful while I waited to be admitted. My room was great! Big screen TV, The nursing staff was amazing and attentive with great advice on getting well. This is not a bad reflection on UTMB but, while in the Bay City Medical Center, I underwent a sonagram and several medical tests that they said would be sent to UTMB. I was fine with that but when I arrived and they attempted to view the data from the sonagram and other tests results, they were unable to do so because their software was not compatible with UTMB. My question would be to the Bay City Medical Group was why run tests before checking to see if they would be accessible at the hospital they sent me to for surgery. Bay City was not a hospital capable of doing a gall bladder surgery. So I had to get the tests rerun. Poor communication on someones part and a waste of money for duplicate tests. I trusted the people at Bay City Medical Center to do the right thing. Anyway, the tests were rerun and the Doctors agreed I needed surgery to remove the gall bladder that contained at least two marble sized stones via laproscopically. I never knew after several years it was my gallbladder after being diagnosed with Acid Reflux. Everything went well and I was returned to my room after recovery and able to order food. What a surprise! The food menu was awesome and the food tasted delicious. My experience at UTMB-Galveston was awesome. This facility was the best experience I ever had in being in a hospital. Thank you UTMB-Galveston!
