An Amazing and beautiful place. Switzerland is one of the few countries to remain completely isolated from both World Wars is Switzerland. This is quite possibly the ultimate destination when it comes to picturesque Europe, with its central plateau rolling hills and large lakes surrounded by the Alps and the Jura Mountains, and one of the most stable modern economies in Europe. It is a preferred location for investments due to the high degree of bank secrecy, which has a great many foreigners starting their own famous Swiss bank accounts that you always see mentioned in movies and novels.

Switzerland is one of those places that you simply have to go back to over and over to experience fully. Every city has its own unique feel, and every part of the country contains some hidden spec of majesty that you might have missed the first time. From hiking to skiing to camping or just pure and utter relaxation at one of the many resorts, there is plenty to do for every level of traveler, regardless if they are a first-timer or a veteran. From the outdoor sports capital of Switzerland at Interlaken, to the mountain resorts at Zermatt and the mighty Matterhorn, or the Swiss wine country near Lausanne, or the throbbing nightlife of Zurich, Switzerland has literally dozens of opportunities just waiting for the adventurous soul.

Choosing what to do in Switzerland means deciding what time of year you want to come. Summertime is best reserved for such activities as hiking, camping, and enjoying the temperate weather, the beer festivals, the wine tastings, and the great outdoors. Winter, on the other hand, means experiencing some of the most pristine skiing conditions on the planet, and some of the best resorts in the Alps. Either way, you're in for a treat, but it would be a lie to suggest that either season is better than the other. For the ultimate experience, multiple trips should be taken.

      • Lucerne
Aside from being the spot where William Tell allegedly demonstrated his archery skills by nearly decapitating his son (and, fortunately, hitting a carefully balanced apple instead), Lucerne has few claims to fame that stretch beyond picturesque, old-world beauty and a truly striking location.

In travel, of course, location is everything, and most people who drop in on this town do so with the intention of strapping on their hiking boots or kitting up their mountain bike before heading for the hills. Lucerne has plenty of its own charms, though, most of them in the pure ‘Swiss village-ness’ of it all. The impressive Chapel Bridge has become a symbol of Lucerne, though the version you’ll find now is a replacement for the original, which burnt down in 1993. Inside the delicate wooden struts of the structure you’ll find images of 12th century life in Lucerne, a charming taste of local history.

Elsewhere you’ll find most eyes are on the mountains: Lucerne has its own glacier gardens, alpine flower garden and boat tours that head to the base of the nearby mountains and provide impressive, close up panoramas. Mount Pilatus is so close to the town that it seems to almost hover over the center, and can be ascended by breathtakingly steep cog railway for still more intense panoramas. If you do manage to avoid the draw of the mountains for a day or two, Lucerne’s compact old town is a maze of delicate passageways that seem to have changed little over the years, as well as being home to an artistic bent – many of the walls are coated in color, with local artists depicting anything from rural scenes to offbeat, colorful modern art.

Whether you see the city as another semi-urban gateway into the glorious Swiss Alps, or you’re here for the place itself, Lucerne certainly has plenty to offer given its modest size. If you enjoy a sense of history blended with a difficult to match small-town, old-world feel and plenty of snowy peaks, you’ll find Lucerne the perfect spot.
        Lucerne, Switzerland
      • Interlaken
Traditionally the site of a convent for the Augustinian Canons, it’s hard to remember that the city has been a tourist destination for the Swiss for longer than most modern travelers have known of tourism. Today, Interlaken stands as one of the most visited destinations in Switzerland, and between the beauty of the surrounding mountains, the Aare River, or the Thun and Brienz Lakes, it’s easy to see why Interlaken has been such a popular destination for hordes of travelers over the years. A major headquarters for backpackers throughout the year, Interlaken sits in the Bernese Highlands region of the country, and the Bernese Oberland Alps are one of the most-visited regions of mountains in the world.

However, the town itself is relatively small, meaning that you can walk or bike around the entire city without any fear of getting lost, making it the perfect getaway for a relaxed vacation where you can simply unwind in a centralized location of magnificent beauty, heading out each day into the surrounding regions for some of the most beautiful hiking, biking, and adventure destinations known to man.

Day trips out of Interlaken are extremely popular, and there are plenty of hiking and biking opportunities, or even the chance to take boat trips out on the lakes. Beyond that, visitors can try out paragliding, bungee jumping, river rafting, sky diving, rock climbing, and more. The town is also a major souvenir spot with the favorites being the Swiss watches, Swiss Army knives, and Swiss chocolate. It’s the perfect combination of Swiss ingenuity and adventure.

Keep in mind that this is a major destination, which means trips need to be booked out months in advance, and prices aren’t exactly the cheapest. Still, it’s the perfect place for an Alpine adventure, and while it’s not necessarily as laid back as other locations, the sheer beauty surrounding more than makes up for dealing with larger crowds.
        Interlaken, Switzerland
      • Thun
Thun belongs to the canton Bern. It's located on the Thuner lake at the effluent of the river Aare.
Thun is presumed to be the door to the Bernese Oberland. The most important transport links to the Bernese Oberland go through Thun.
