• Interlaken

  Traditionally the site of a convent for the Augustinian Canons, it’s hard to remember that the city has been a tourist destination for the Swiss for longer than most modern travelers have known of tourism. Today, Interlaken stands as one of the most visited destinations in Switzerland, and between the beauty of the surrounding mountains, the Aare River, or the Thun and Brienz Lakes, it’s easy to see why Interlaken has been such a popular destination for hordes of travelers over the years. A major headquarters for backpackers throughout the year, Interlaken sits in the Bernese Highlands region of the country, and the Bernese Oberland Alps are one of the most-visited regions of mountains in the world.
  
  However, the town itself is relatively small, meaning that you can walk or bike around the entire city without any fear of getting lost, making it the perfect getaway for a relaxed vacation where you can simply unwind in a centralized location of magnificent beauty, heading out each day into the surrounding regions for some of the most beautiful hiking, biking, and adventure destinations known to man.
  
  Day trips out of Interlaken are extremely popular, and there are plenty of hiking and biking opportunities, or even the chance to take boat trips out on the lakes. Beyond that, visitors can try out paragliding, bungee jumping, river rafting, sky diving, rock climbing, and more. The town is also a major souvenir spot with the favorites being the Swiss watches, Swiss Army knives, and Swiss chocolate. It’s the perfect combination of Swiss ingenuity and adventure.
  
  Keep in mind that this is a major destination, which means trips need to be booked out months in advance, and prices aren’t exactly the cheapest. Still, it’s the perfect place for an Alpine adventure, and while it’s not necessarily as laid back as other locations, the sheer beauty surrounding more than makes up for dealing with larger crowds.

• Bern

  Bern is the capital of Switzerland (not Zurich or Geneva!) and a charming little town more or less in the middle of the country and close to the french speaking part. With the 130.000 habitants Bern is the fourth largest city in Switzerland. The nice Old Town is located in the kink of the river Aare and is an UNESCO World Heritage Site. Bern owns a small international airport called Bern-Belp.
  
  Its famous for its slowness and laid back attitude of its inhabitants (of course that is in the most cases just a prejudice).
  
  Many national buildings and sights can be found here... Don't miss the Bärengraben! The bear is the heraldic animal of the town and the canton. The Einstein House is here and is where Einstein developed the theory of relativity.
  
  Every year in the middle of July the Gurtenfestival take place. This is one of the biggest music festival of Switzerland with international stars.
  
  You can clearly see that this city hasn't changed at all in over five hundred years except for the adornment of modern shop signs and the odd car or tram rattling past.
  
  The hills all around, and the steep banks of the river, are still liberally wooded. Views, both of the Old Town’s clustered roofs and of the majestic Alps on the horizon, are breathtaking.

• Fribourg

  Fribourg (French; German: Freiburg or Freiburg im Üechtland but mostly Fribourg) is situated about 28km South-West of Bern. It is the capital of the District de la Sarine (district of Sarine) and the Swiss canton of Fribourg. It is an important administrative, educational with a bilingual university German-French, and economic center on the cultural border between French and German Switzerland. It is situated on both sides of the river Saane/Sarine, on the Swiss plateau. Fribourg’s Vielle Ville (Old City), sits on a small rocky hill above the valley of the Sarine and is one of the best maintained in Switzerland. The charming Old City with its café’s attracts to spend some time there and shop.
  
  Cultural experiences include the festival of religious music, the international folklore convention, the jazz parade, an international film festival and Cinéplus. Counterculture also finds its place through the Fri-Art art center, and Fri-Son, for rock and punk music.
  
  Don't forget to eat some yummy fondue moitié-moitié" (French for half-half) with half Vacherin Fribourgeois and half Gruyère.
