The city of San Antonio, Texas, is so heavily Hispanic that you could almost have drifted across the Mexican border already. In fact, had you come here a few hundred years ago, you would have been the other side of the border, and with this hefty heritage comes plenty to see, and ample, endless streams of tourists. Here you can rodeo, fiesta and explore the enchanting old Mexican buildings, all without ever leaving American soil.

Of course, it wouldn’t be San Antonio without The Alamo, best known for the Texans 19th century stand against the Mexicans, which famously eventually failed, but remains a symbol of courage, sacrifice and liberty to many Americans. The building itself dates back nearly three hundred years; it’s rustic walls forever crammed with tourists, but poignant nonetheless. Now set in downtown San Antonio, you can play Davy Crockett, explore the history in depth in the neighboring museum and party on the nearby riverfront, where there are countless restaurants.

You can take your pick – explore the deadly serious side, join in San Antonio’s party culture, or blend the two at will. The Shrine and the Long Barrack Museum both having telling stories of Texan history, while the chance to sample Mexican staples like fruit-infused waters along the street sides show you that even now, Antonio’s far from typically American.

Away from that particular period of history, San Antonio has a few other special sites, too. The city-center botanical gardens are a big draw for anyone with green fingers, while you’ll find plenty of Alamo themed attractions, one of the country’s biggest zoos and an ample modern art scene to be explored, too. Vineyards, art and craft centers and the chance to become a cowboy for the day are all within an easy day trip, too.

San Antonio will probably always be known for one thing above all others, and its valiant history is blended with an enjoyably varied culture and ample chances to do things that are probably entirely new. What more could you ask for?

    • New Braunfels
New Braunfels is a German settlement town that has kept many German traditions and festivals close to its heart. There Octoberfest brings people from all over the US. It has been a staple in New Braunfels for decades and the clothes are traditional.

New Braunfels is also the home to 3 German bakeries that are simply delightful and after one visit you will be returning. The restaurants are a little plain, there are two German restaurants, 2 barbque (they are ok but very popular), and the standard American chain style restaurants thrown in.

There is a large outlet mall for those who feel the need to shop. The Schlitterbahn is one of the largest water parks in the US and has something for all ages. Across the street is the water shute, you rent tubes and go to the far end of the input area, jump in the water preferably on your tube. The water speeds up and shoots you through a cement tube, lots of fun.

The there is the well known river tubing on the Comal or Guadalupe rivers. A 3 hour river tour ends up taking all day! You can tube, kayak or raft, there is camping along the river and it is a huge summer activity in these parts. Tubing can be a party-filled experience with many people bring ample cooler space filled with their favorite adult beverage. If you go tubing take a couple bags of large marshmellows, when things get quiet and slow people around you will open the marshmellows, soak them in water and then start throwing them at each other. It is great messy fun that turns the water white and drive the fish to the surface for the food.

New Braunfels is a nice town and a good place to get supplies. It is on the state road 46 that is perfect for I 10 traffic that dont want to drive through that crazy San Antonio. State road 46 is a pleasant drive through the country from Seguin to Boern with no traffic problems.

      • Great place to sleep, the staff was very nice, convenient location next to the highway/freeway, not far from stores or fast food areas. They provide breakfast in the am not much, but it's free and convenient. Worth the price, love that the vending machines are inside which made myself feel safer. Overall it was a good place to stay
      • Guy at night super helpful.. I appreciate he took his time to go look for a roll away... Very nice.. I did not get his name..
      • Location has convenient access to the highway for getting around San Antonio. Room prices are quite reasonable. Unfortunately the building is due for some renovation. Everything was functional, but the age of the rooms is starting to show. Still worth staying here if you wanna save a few bucks
      • Definitely not worth $75 a night. For starters, the ice machine did not work. The bed we slept on felt like springs and was not comfortable. The place has no fitness center, and the room we stayed in was unleveled and the coffee maker was spilling out because it wasn't level. The TV was a 22inch, not the 42" shown in the pictures, and the toilet was too close to the door and wall. We could hear it when people walked down the hallway and upstairs above our room. For around $45 there is another hotel that has a fitness center, kid friendly, and a full kitchen and much softer beds. The only thing I enjoyed about this room was the decor and the oversized wall art. Other than that, not much else. FYI-Pool is tiny as well. Save money and go someplace else.
      • Place to sleep is all. Saw a roach in ten minutes, just carbs for breakfast. Location was good and front desk person was lovely. Bout it
