Users Assigned: KazmiRichmond is the capital of Virginia, and is an independent city, not part of a county as many places in Virginia are, being a Commonwealth of places. Located near the James River, Richmond was an early settlement branching out from Jamestown. The City known today as Richmond was officially founded in 1737. Patrick Henry delivered his famous "Give me liberty or give me death" speech in 1775 at St. John's Church (E. Broad Street between 24th and 25th Streets) where, incidentally, George Wythe and Elizabeth Arnold Poe are buried.
Richmond was the capitol of the American Confederate States, but since that time has been a remarkable place in the history of America as a Union of States. That history is worth exploring all over Virginia. From the days of early settlements to the Civil War to the formation of a Union, Virginia has been at the center of things. Richmond remains a place to experience that history. Modern, with North and South ways, and an avenue of monuments from Robert E. Lee to Arthur Ashe, it's something to see.
It has a world class Museum of fine arts, Science Museum, sports & cultural venues, as well as a flavor of the old south with perspective. Richmond remains one place on the map in American culture that is a must see. Close to DC by train, it is also not far from the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountain range to the west near Charlottesville and the Cheasapeake Bay and Atlantic Ocean to the East.
