Overview You can't Edit
Users Assigned: KazmiNew Salem is a small town of under 1000 (pretty constant since 2000) located along Highway 139 just south of Exit 127 of Interstate 94 in Morton County not far from Bismarck, the capital and is part of the Bismarck Metropolitan Statistical Area. New Salem was founded in 1883 when John Christensen showed up with just a few belongings and a brand new breaking plow for farming. He kind of expected a town but there was none there and he found himself alone.
A train containing the remaining settlers arrived later that night and proceeded a few miles farther down the line to the west. About 12 hours later Christensen was joined by the other settlers and they started a settlement called “Salem”. A new siding was constructed on the site selected for the town and “New Salem” was established. New Salem has a nice little historic district with several buildings of historical and/or architectural interest. New Salem also has a nice historical museum, and is home to “Salem Sue” the world’s largest fiberglass Holstein cow.

BismarckBismarck is the capital of North Dakota and has a population of about 67,000 (up 21% since 2000) making it the 2nd most populace city in the state after Fargo. Bismarck is located at the Intersection of Interstate 94 (Exits 157 to 161) and U.S. Highway 83 in Burleigh County in Central North Dakota. Bismarck was established in 1872 and was made the state capital in 1889 when the state of North Dakota was formed out of the Dakota Territory. The town was first named "Edwinton" after the Engineer-in-Chief of the Northern Pacific Railroad but was renamed the next year after German Chancellor Otto Von Bismarck to attract German settlers and money for expanding the railroad.
Two fairly well known people from Bismarck (at least in some circles) are Paula Broadwell the author who had the affair with General Petraeus and wrestler Brock Lesner. Burleigh County was organized in 1873. The Burleigh County Courthouse was completed by architect Ira Rush in 1931 using the Art Deco style of architecture and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The North Dakota Capitol Building is the tallest building in the state at 21 stories.
There are quite a few state historic sites in and around Bismarck like the Former Governor's Mansion State Historic Site. Bismarck has a nice historic area with a number of buildings of historical and/or architectural interest.
