      • Huntsville

Huntsville, AL, which has earned the nickname “Rocket City”, was incorporated in 1811 as Twickenham, but was renamed shortly thereafter to honor one of its founding citizens, John Hunt. Resting on the banks of the Tennessee River, the city was an important rail shipping point and could boast of being one of the leading cotton and munitions producing areas in the South. With its rail and river access the city was a strategic point in the Civil War.

Huntsville's population was 180,105 as of 2010, with its metropolitan area about double that. The city relies heavily, directly and indirectly, on the aerospace industry for employment.

The U.S. Space and Rocket Center, the Redstone Arsenal, the Centre of Marshall Space Flight and the Cummings Research Park are also situated within the premises of Huntsville.

The city with its roots so deep into spaceflight and especially ballistic missile technology earned a “Red Star” designation from the Soviet Union during the Cold War. This meant that in the event of a nuclear war between the two super powers, Huntsville would be high on the target list for the Soviet missiles.

Summers in Huntsville are hot and humid. Winters are mild with high temperatures rarely below 40.

Huntsville has many parks, golf courses, several historic areas, and several professional sports (minor league) teams to serve as diversions. The town is serviced by many major fast food and casual dining chains and hotels. There are plenty of local restaurants as well.

        • Clean and efficient airport. Delta staff was friendly and courteous. My departure and arrival was a good experience. I look forward to my next trip through this airport.
        • Let's face it, air travel today isn't what it used to be. The experience flying in and out of Huntsville is about as easy an airport experience that you can get these days. Departures: At $8 per day, the economy parking lot is a short walk to the terminal. I carry-on my luggage, therefore am able to skip the ticketing area altogether (with pre-printed or e-boarding pass) and go straight to security. I've never seen more than four people in the TSA Pre-check line, which makes security a breeze. Free wi-fi is available for use while waiting for flights and the new all-glass jetways are really cool. Ground holds due to Atlanta ATC notwithstanding, departures are quick and easy, never having to wait for more than one other plane. Arrivals: For those waiting to pick up arriving passengers, Huntsville is one of the few remaining airports that allow you to wait in your car outside the baggage claim exit. No need to drive around in circles or wait in a cell phone lot 3 miles from the airport. High airfares: If you purchase your tickets far enough in advance, ticket prices in and out of Huntsville are reasonable. However, if you wait until the last minute, be prepared to pay a lot for convenient travel to/from a community that has a lot of last minute government travelers.
        • America's worst airport? Certainly the most expensive, and for no good reason. Go to Chattanooga if you have a choice. The only good thing at HSV is short and mostly friendly TSA lines if you go anytime other than 6am. Has no useful direct flights unless you want to go to Atlanta or Dallas quickly.
        • I would like to Thank Charisse who is the supervisor at American Airlines for all of her help. My plan was going to be delayed and I was going to miss my connection so I was able to take another flight the next day. Charisse went out of her way to make sure that I was able to retrieve my baggage from the plane and also walked me to the ticket counter to make sure I was able to get onto a flight the next day. I can't say enough for her and also China who was also behind the ticket counter. They went out of their way to help me. On top of everything I was sick and with their help made my experience with American Airlines and Huntsville Airport a good experience. I hope that Charisse and China both get recognized for a job well done. A very satisfied Customer
        • Fox News on a giant screen at 4:30 AM or anytime. Bias TV on a giant scale. One sided propaganda. You are better then this Huntsville.
        • Even though this is the most expensive us airport to fly out of it was worth not driving 4 hours to Atlanta Every thing was super clean I only have 2 hated things 1. The fire alarms go off all the time in fact we got back August 1st from England and they started going off so a system replacement is in order 2. There is no "restaurant"
        • My favorite airport to fly out of. You can arrive an hour before your flight and still have time to spare.
        • This airport us so simple, the staff is friendly. It's also very beautiful, clean and wheel chair accessible. Even the tsa agents are nice
        • Our flight left early and we was not notified. And there's no coffee here at the airport!!!!
        • An easy airport to move around in with very nice facilities including jetways with glass sides. Lots of aviation, rocketry, and defense industry artwork (don't forget to look up at the ceiling tiles!) and ads around to make for an interesting stroll through the concourse. On the double TV displays hanging at each gate, one has the news while the other is always an ad reel for local defense companies. The gates are wide and uncrowded, but a lack of charging stations or outlets on the benches is a major drawback. There are only a few outlets scattered among the 12 or so gates. As far as food goes, I only tried McAllister's because everything else was closed on a Sunday afternoon. It was perfectly adequet; neither good nor bad. In summary, this airport is nicer than it seems to have any business being based on how sleepy it felt when I passed through on a Friday morning and Sunday afternoon. I'd be pleased to use it again as the combination of nice facilities and small crowds is certainly pleasant.
        • Easy parking and gate access. Short term parking is closer but more expensive. On long trips consider drop off. TSA is efficient and courteous. Considering the amount of air traffic it is odd that fares are so much more than at most regional airports.
        • I love how it's so close and the shops and restaurants are great. But, their flights are so over priced. It's cheaper to drive to Birmingham or Nashville to catch a flight. Every time I need to get on a flight I always check Huntsville first and then I usually end up going somewhere else.
        • Ample parking. In-terminal seating pretty dated. I have yet to find a power outlet. That said, service is excellent. Airport is clean and quiet.
        • Used them a while back but just got around to reviewing them. Very clean, signage made it very easy to navigate and all the lines moved fairly quickly. Just wish they had a few more eateries and a souvenir shop.
        • Beautiful airport, but horrible at updating customers on flight status. The last two times I’ve flown out of here, both times my flight ended up being severely delayed or canceled altogether, but I received no notification even though I had enrolled in text notifications. I had to go ask the flight attendant at the desk to confirm what I suspected, then ended up having to wait to fly till the next day because everything was already booked. This needs to be fixed because time is of the essence when flying.
