When did the hand luggage size restriction on planes begin?
I remember traveling with my parents in the 70s (when flying was much more of a luxury and privilege than it is these days), and remember there was a hold luggage check restriction - although the check in clerk would often not bat an eye for a kilo or 2 overweight.

But I don't remember the humiliation of having to force whatever hand luggage we were carrying into a metal frame to be permitted to take it on-board!

Does anyone know when this came into being, and any of the history behind it?
