    A lot seems to depend on the flight schedules and times of year. Some commentators cite busy overcrowded gates, others empty spaces. The price of things at the airport, and it should be understood in Finland generally (should you be stopping-over and not in transit) are high in comparison to other places, including those elsewhere (outside Scandinavia) in the Eurozone.

    There are new terminal gates and associated shopping areas being finalised at this time (late 2016), but there are also plans for another phase of expansion as Finnair purchases a fleet of new A350s for the far eastern routes Helsinki is well placed to feeder to other European cities.

    The airport is impeccably clean and staff proudly courteous; there are good connections to the city and elsewhere in Finland. There is a new train to the city centre.

  • Getting around? You can't Edit

    Medium sized airport; means some long walks along concourses - for outside continental Europe (schengen area), Asia and North America you have to pass through passport control and then to the new gates. These are big gates with plenty of space.

  • Accommodation Description Room and Lodgings You can't Edit

    Airport hotels are plentiful; the free shuttle buses run from outside the terminal building at approx 30min intervals.

    You can check availability via dedicated terminals just inside from the bus stops, and there is a manned helpdesk for city information; although you will have to do the booking/reservation yourself.

    If you want to sleep at the airport, there are a fair few couches around - particularly in the new long distance part of the terminal; however these are not suitable for all - some commentators have complained about the shape of them.

  • Getting there? You can't Edit

    Taxis are expensive in Finland (the driver does not expect a tip - 'they are expensive enough already'), but you can save some money and still retain convenience by using the "Airport taxi" minibus service. Find the yellow counter downstairs near the exit to the bus stops and the information desk. You can tell them at the desk where you want to go and they will combine you with others and drop you off in order. You can haggle the price.

     

  • Baggage Storage You can't Edit

    There is a baggage storage area. It is a little hard to find, you have to take a lift down from the main floor level near the Information Desk. You can leave your bag in the locker, or talk to the attendant and they will transport your bag to another location for the duration (for longer trips)

        Surrounded by freezing waters spattered with picturesque islands and islets, Finnish capital Helsinki is an ever more fashionable European destination. Wonder the sparkling streets and you’ll find plenty of vibrant modernism in the form of art noveau architecture and spacious cafes alongside tiny corners of carefully preserved Finnish heritage that can’t have changed in centuries.

        Especially during the icy winters, Helsinki can be glacially cold, but during the summer its lively and welcoming, and begs you to explore exciting spots like the tightly packed islands of Suomenlinna, where you can picnic amongst the soaring ferns, and the happy natives still gather every evening to wave as the ferries glide through the narrow straight between the islands. Another essential offshore experience is eating at the unforgettably romantic island restaurants, towering amongst the rocks and serving magnificent locally caught seafood.

        If you prefer something a bit more lively you should head for the city beer terraces which are more sophisticated than their German equivalent, and overwhelmingly dreamy amongst the outdoor heaters when the snow is falling all around you. Follow it up, if you can, with an atmospheric concert at Temppeliaukio, an underground church cut from the rock, and now a highly atmospheric auditorium.

        Board the old steam train from Helsinki to the old trading town of Porvoo for a taste of the Finland of old and, in fact, Finland in general, which is largely very different to its capital, and you’ll find cobbled streets, wooden houses, roman influences and one of the country’s most spectacular village settings.

        Back in the capital, you can tour the pubs by tram, check out the zoo or the sea life centre, or entertain the kids in the hectic water park. Come during Winter, and Helsinki will have you drifting around a seemingly deserted city of frosted streets, with plenty of hidden corners of warmth to track down amongst it all. Come in summer, though, and you’re in for a treat which is Helsinki’s warm, modern, and home to plenty of exciting outdoor draws and an intriguing downtown.

        This is the port complex for cruise ships to Russia. There are ticket purchase/check in areas for the cruise lines, a small shop, ATM machines, luggage storage machines.

        You can interconnect to Helsinki transit system on tram line 9, and take taxis from here.

        Some reports that the passages to the ships are quite long distances, but are buggy/wheelchair friendly.

          Everything works well. Good parking with mechanic services. Terminals have professional staff and good signs & info monitors. Easy atmosphere.

          Not enough benches for waiting passengers. Information desks are superb. Customer service can be improved. Overall good.

          Helsinki Airport is quick to get through with nice services - even a sauna! The prices are not so nice, though, but that's the same at any European airport. Lots of bars and restaurants & shops. A pharmacy.

          Unbelievably overcrowded airport. Especially the older parts of the terminal buildings. There's just one thing to do here, tear it down and build modern terminals. Tax free shopping is OK but nothing special. The only positives are the newer parts of the terminal with the flights to Asia and that there is a new train to Helsinki city that is competitively priced. If you are flying with Norwegian, be aware of the long and crowded walk to the gates in the oldest parts of the building.

          Ready to leave for my next adventure from Helsinki-Vantaa Airport!

          Finland’s biggest airport and the only one I have used until now. It is small one when compared to other capital city airports around Europe and world. But that is only good thing if you ask from me. There is never long queues. Everything is modern and clean. I love their toilets. They are super clean, forest sounds make them cozy and there is enough room and light to put on make-up, freshen yourself after long flight and do other important things. Also, Finnish tap water is drinkable so if you have empty water bottle you can also easily fill it up there.

          I recommend coming to airport about one and half hour before your flight. There is usually no queues but it is good to be early. Helsinki-Vantaa has good connections to Helsinki and around Finland. If you are traveling to Helsinki, ask first from tourist information what kind of bus/tram/metro/train ticket you should buy. They are friendly and always ready to help. If you want to store your luggage at the airport, be aware that they only have a few lockers that are usually occupied. If you are planning layover day at Helsinki, consider taking your luggage with you and storing it at Helsinki Railway Station.

          Bad side: everything is expensive like usually in Finland. I recommend eating before coming to the airport if you are on tight budget. There is of course a few restaurants and cafes but everything costs a fortune. Souvenir shops and tax free aren’t that cheap either but have some cool products. Moomin Shop, Iittala and Marimekko are Finnish products so those shops are worth of look. Other interesting shopping choices I usually personally go through are bookshop, Victoria’s Secret,

          Even if the shops and restaurants are expensive Helsinki-Vantaa Airport has some amazing free services. Firstly, free wifi! Nowadays one of the most important things when I visit airport. And secondly a lot of free charging points. And when I say a lot of I mean they are everywhere, especially if you are leaving from the international terminal.

          Helsinki-Vantaa has also Uniputki GoSleep service that is free at day time but costs at night time. Basically, this service provides bed like chairs that are nice to have short nap between your flights. And if you are just leaving from the airport like I usually do these chairs also provide protection from curious eyes if you want to work. Other free things I LOVE and I have discovered while hanging out in Helsinki-Vantaa Airport: Book Swap (find free books for your flight), Arctic World of Santa Claus, different games (okay these cost 1-2€ but are so much fun if you have too much time), observation deck and free Photo Gallery.
