HelsinkiSurrounded by freezing waters spattered with picturesque islands and islets, Finnish capital Helsinki is an ever more fashionable European destination. Wonder the sparkling streets and you’ll find plenty of vibrant modernism in the form of art noveau architecture and spacious cafes alongside tiny corners of carefully preserved Finnish heritage that can’t have changed in centuries.
Especially during the icy winters, Helsinki can be glacially cold, but during the summer its lively and welcoming, and begs you to explore exciting spots like the tightly packed islands of Suomenlinna, where you can picnic amongst the soaring ferns, and the happy natives still gather every evening to wave as the ferries glide through the narrow straight between the islands. Another essential offshore experience is eating at the unforgettably romantic island restaurants, towering amongst the rocks and serving magnificent locally caught seafood.
If you prefer something a bit more lively you should head for the city beer terraces which are more sophisticated than their German equivalent, and overwhelmingly dreamy amongst the outdoor heaters when the snow is falling all around you. Follow it up, if you can, with an atmospheric concert at Temppeliaukio, an underground church cut from the rock, and now a highly atmospheric auditorium.
Board the old steam train from Helsinki to the old trading town of Porvoo for a taste of the Finland of old and, in fact, Finland in general, which is largely very different to its capital, and you’ll find cobbled streets, wooden houses, roman influences and one of the country’s most spectacular village settings.
Back in the capital, you can tour the pubs by tram, check out the zoo or the sea life centre, or entertain the kids in the hectic water park. Come during Winter, and Helsinki will have you drifting around a seemingly deserted city of frosted streets, with plenty of hidden corners of warmth to track down amongst it all. Come in summer, though, and you’re in for a treat which is Helsinki’s warm, modern, and home to plenty of exciting outdoor draws and an intriguing downtown.Helsinki, Finland -

This is the port complex for cruise ships to Russia. There are ticket purchase/check in areas for the cruise lines, a small shop, ATM machines, luggage storage machines.
You can interconnect to Helsinki transit system on tram line 9, and take taxis from here.
Some reports that the passages to the ships are quite long distances, but are buggy/wheelchair friendly.

A lot seems to depend on the flight schedules and times of year. Some commentators cite busy overcrowded gates, others empty spaces. The price of things at the airport, and it should be understood in Finland generally (should you be stopping-over and not in transit) are high in comparison to other places, including those elsewhere (outside Scandinavia) in the Eurozone.
There are new terminal gates and associated shopping areas being finalised at this time (late 2016), but there are also plans for another phase of expansion as Finnair purchases a fleet of new A350s for the far eastern routes Helsinki is well placed to feeder to other European cities.
The airport is impeccably clean and staff proudly courteous; there are good connections to the city and elsewhere in Finland. There is a new train to the city centre.

This is a brilliant museum to take kids, loads of hands-on and dress-up stuff and it's completely free. If you're in Helsinki with kids and it's miserable weather, take them here. There's a 60s/70s style flat which nostalgiacs will love.

Last week my Indian friend was visiting me in Helsinki and it was raining so much that we had to decide something to do inside. I have never been to Helsinki City Museum but I know it was free place with something to see. So, we gave it a go. If you only have a few days in Helsinki I wouldn’t recommend visiting but if you have more time it is nice place to spend a few hours.
They have permanent exhibitions that introduce Helsinki and Finnish history for you. I found “time machine” Helsinki City Museum has extremely cool. They use latest technology to take you historic Finnish town. Another permanent exhibition is Children’s town where kids and a little older childish travelers can learn about Finnish history. For example you can watch old TV series, meet real Finnish grandparents and visit traditional Finnish home.
In addition to permanent exhibitions Helsinki City Museum’s fourth floor has changing interesting tiny exhibitions. When we visited there was memories of smells and Helsinki exhibition. It wasn’t the most interesting one but I really loved the space where this art was displayed. Very comfy and nice to just spend some time with your friends. Even if I didn’t like this exhibition I know that they have had some super popular ones in past. So, that’s why I recommend checking their website and maybe doing quick visit to the top floor.
Because the museums is free you can just walk in and go to the different exhibitions. Helsinki City Museum is located conveniently on corner of Senate Square so it is easy to visit during your visit there or after coming from Suomenlinna ferry. We had some difficulties finding this place because you have to walk to dark side alley/inner ward. Just follow the signs confidently and you should be able to find the place.
