      • Helsinki
Surrounded by freezing waters spattered with picturesque islands and islets, Finnish capital Helsinki is an ever more fashionable European destination. Wonder the sparkling streets and you’ll find plenty of vibrant modernism in the form of art noveau architecture and spacious cafes alongside tiny corners of carefully preserved Finnish heritage that can’t have changed in centuries.

Especially during the icy winters, Helsinki can be glacially cold, but during the summer its lively and welcoming, and begs you to explore exciting spots like the tightly packed islands of Suomenlinna, where you can picnic amongst the soaring ferns, and the happy natives still gather every evening to wave as the ferries glide through the narrow straight between the islands. Another essential offshore experience is eating at the unforgettably romantic island restaurants, towering amongst the rocks and serving magnificent locally caught seafood.

If you prefer something a bit more lively you should head for the city beer terraces which are more sophisticated than their German equivalent, and overwhelmingly dreamy amongst the outdoor heaters when the snow is falling all around you. Follow it up, if you can, with an atmospheric concert at Temppeliaukio, an underground church cut from the rock, and now a highly atmospheric auditorium.

Board the old steam train from Helsinki to the old trading town of Porvoo for a taste of the Finland of old and, in fact, Finland in general, which is largely very different to its capital, and you’ll find cobbled streets, wooden houses, roman influences and one of the country’s most spectacular village settings.

Back in the capital, you can tour the pubs by tram, check out the zoo or the sea life centre, or entertain the kids in the hectic water park. Come during Winter, and Helsinki will have you drifting around a seemingly deserted city of frosted streets, with plenty of hidden corners of warmth to track down amongst it all. Come in summer, though, and you’re in for a treat which is Helsinki’s warm, modern, and home to plenty of exciting outdoor draws and an intriguing downtown.

      • Helsinki Airport

A lot seems to depend on the flight schedules and times of year. Some commentators cite busy overcrowded gates, others empty spaces. The price of things at the airport, and it should be understood in Finland generally (should you be stopping-over and not in transit) are high in comparison to other places, including those elsewhere (outside Scandinavia) in the Eurozone.

There are new terminal gates and associated shopping areas being finalised at this time (late 2016), but there are also plans for another phase of expansion as Finnair purchases a fleet of new A350s for the far eastern routes Helsinki is well placed to feeder to other European cities.

The airport is impeccably clean and staff proudly courteous; there are good connections to the city and elsewhere in Finland. There is a new train to the city centre.

        • Nice historical place. You need take ferry from Helsinki to reach this place. Truly nice view. You will find many old sturcture castle kind of building here. There is a museum also and the entry fee around 10 euro. Best time to visit is 9 AM to 3 PM. It will take approx 45 min time to cover whole place. Highly Recommend for tourist!!!
        • Suomenlinna is one of the specialties of Helsinki! It's easy to reach from the city; only a 10min ferry ride get you there and the ships commute between the island the Helsinki once an hour in cold months n twice or more during summer. Quite, adventurous and historic! Couple of museums and well designed statues.
        • the ferry ride over cost €8 return and is a pleasant ride with some nice views. There are five islands to explore which you can walk around. If you're going in the winter time it was nice going in the middle of the day. It was quite magical really as it was so sunny with beautiful views over the water and then it started snowing out of nowhere which made the buildings prettier in another way.
        • The Hesinki card includes ferry ride and a walking tour of the island. As of March 2017 the timing works great - we got on the bus tour of Helsinki at 11am, and arrived near the port in time for 1pm ferry to the fortress island. The walking tour starts at 1:30pm and is a short walk from the dock on the island. I highly recommend taking the tour. The guide was very informative and knowledgeable. She showed us parts of the fortress we would not have been able to find ourselves, and certainly would have no idea what they were if we did find them. Outside winter there may be more tour times. Suomenlinna is a great trip from Helsinki, it includes a 20min ferry ride (in March we were passing through icy water!) and it a great historic site for those interested in Finland's history.
        • Great place to discover, cafes and restaurants, little supermarket and a lot of history. Fast ride by boat from centre of Helsinki and back. All tourists must visit place, just look for better weather if visiting at winter.

        • Winter Day in Suomenlinna Sea Fortress
I visited Suomenlinna sea fortress after a long time so I also wanted to share my experience here. I live in Finland but Suomenlinna is one of those destinations that make even me feel like tourist. If you even end up visiting Helsinki, Suomenlinna sea fortress is one of the must things to do. Ferry from Helsinki’s Market Square costs as much as normal transportation in Helsinki and if you got day ticket for trams and busses like I did you can use Suomenlinna Ferry freely.

This year was my first time visiting Suomenlinna at winter time. In fact, I believed there wouldn’t be other people but that small island was full of tourists. We locals usually visit only at summer when it is warm and green. Those tourists and my non-Finnish friend seemed to enjoy this cold and raw Suomenlinna experience. I still prefer it at Summer because wind and snow make it hard to walk around without freezing to death. That doesn’t mean winter wouldn’t be good time to visit. Just remember to dress warmly and you can enjoy beautiful sea views and the warm museums.

Before going remember to check from Suomenlinna’s official site what is currently happening in this popular Helsinki’s tourist attraction. When we visited there was this castle elf thing for children and if I what I have heard from my friends there is different tours and events often.

I love Suomenlinna sea fortress because of its colorful town with idyllic buildings and perfect picnic spots. There is also interesting museums but you won’t probably get a lot of out of them if you don’t know something about Finnish history beforehand. One museums I recommend for everyone is Suomenlinna’s Toy museum. Even if history isn’t your thing you will probably enjoy this.

The biggest and most important thing in this sea fortress island is of course the castle. (Suomenlinna literally means Finland’s castle). It is also UNESCO world heritage destination and every Finn is quite proud of that. We followed “blue line” that we found from Suomenlinna’s official website. It passes all the most important sights of Suomenlinna sea fortress. There is canons, walls and other castle like features. Suomenlinna’s King’s Gate is the main castle part and also my favorite photography spot. You can walk through it like ancient king (or queen).

Because I visited at winter time I totally started to miss my visits there at summers with my family. I remember how we used to have picnics and enjoy Finnish tasty sweets sitting under tree’s shadow. If you are in Helsinki from June to August, do just that. Buy some Fazer chocolate (that’s the most possible Finnish sweet to eat) and other local foods before taking the ferry to Suomenlinna. Then just find spot with beautiful view and enjoy your Finnish afternoon. Helsinki doesn’t have that many attractions for tourists so I definitely recommend this one…
