• Rodey

  Rodey is what is called a census-designated place, which is a populated area that does not fit the description of an unincorporated town, a town or a city. Rodey is also what is called a “Colonia”, an unofficial, unregulated collection of housing (usually substandard) that clusters in a rural area. Rodey is in a largely agricultural area and the people here are mostly farm workers. Rodey has a population of about 400 which is a slight decrease from 2000, and is 65% male with a median age of 34.
  
  Rodey is in Dona Ana County along New Mexico Highway 185 just southeast of the town of Hatch. The main crops here are Chile peppers, cotton and some citrus. It is an interesting view into a world many of us never see; but of limited tourist value beyond that. Rodey WAS a town at one point and was established in 1865 as "Colorado" after the red cliffs to the west. The name was later changed to Rodey after Bernard S. Rodey and Irish immigrant who became a prominent New Mexican lawyer and legislator and who helped start the New Mexican university system.
