When it was initially constructed back in the early 20th century, the Great Ocean Road was built as a way to provide work for soldiers returning from the first world war, and when it was completed it was dedicated as a memorial to those who lost their lives. These days, it is a 243 kilometer stretch of road that winds its way along the southeastern coast of Australia between Torquay and Warrnambool, and is considered one of the most scenic coastal drives in the world, and definitely one of Australia's best. It was built by around 3,000 men returning from the war, termed Diggers, and it was one of the most technologically challenging stretches of road ever built in the world.

Whether it is the views offered over Bass Straight or the Southern Ocean, or the panorama one can glimpse when near Port Campbell, looking out over such wonders as the Loch Ard Gorge, the Grotto, or the London Arch, the Great Ocean Road offers the traveler a unique opportunity to get up close and personal with some of Australia's most scenic coastal wonders, and while the Outback carries its own unique views and themes, this is coastal Australia at its best. While many people choose to simply drive along the road, there are so many places one can stop while traveling that it is conceivable to spend a week or more working your way down the stretch, despite the fact that it's only 243 kilometers.

For example, the foot paths around Lorne offer a chance for visitors to see some of the most impressive waterfalls in the world, and the road passes right through the Great Otway National Park, containing some of the last temperate rain forests in Australia. In addition, the road works its way through Melba Gully State Park and other places, with each stop containing greater wonders than the previous. The road can be fairly windy in the mountains, so bring motion sickness pills if you can’t handle a few switchbacks.
