Gilbert (population 208,000) is the largest incorporated "town" (as opposed to "city") in the United States. Gilbert owes its beginnings to William "Bobby" Gilbert, who provided land to the Arizona Eastern Railway in 1902 to construct a rail line between Phoenix and Florence, Arizona. Incorporated in 1920, Gilbert was primarily a farming community fueled by the rail line and construction of the Roosevelt Dam and the Eastern and Consolidated Canals. It remained an agricultural town for many years and was known as the "Hay Capital of the World" from 1911 until the late 1920s.

The Riparian at Water Ranch features hiking and equestrian trails open to the community. The preserve provides a great opportunity for wildlife and bird watching and is considered the premier bird watching facility in the Phoenix metropolitan region. Close to 250 species of birds have been sighted and many people come from different states and countries to see the beautiful and sometimes rare birds. The park boasts covered picnic areas, a dinosaur dig site, and campsites that can be reserved for a desert getaway. The preserve also has the valley's only astronomy observatory.

Gilbert also offers six different golf courses.

Ranked Fourth-Best Dog Park in the United States, Cosmo Park is named for Gilbert's first police dog: Cosmo van Blitsaerd of Holland. The park features a lake where dogs may swim and two dog wash stations.

    • Scottsdale
If there was a test to dictate cities that are somewhat of an anomaly, Scottsdale could apply for entrance into the club and pass without a question asked. Located in the eastern part of Maricopa County in Arizona, right across from Phoenix, Scottsdale is considered a resort destination in the middle of the desert, with the New York Times describing the city as a desert version of Miami's South Beach, with plenty of late-night partying and a buzzing hotels scene. With a distinctly Western theme and style, Scottsdale is one of those upscale places where shopping and visiting takes a little more than a budget traveler can afford, but it is definitely worth the splurge if you want an all-inclusive experience.

In many ways, Scottsdale is similar to a great number of British cities in the sense that there are over 130 miles of canals working their way through the entire city. The difference is that in Britain the canals are used for boating these days, and were once used for transportation of goods in between cities, whereas in Scottsdale they are used primarily for irrigation. It is these canals which have created the vibrant and green surroundings in the middle of the desert, and they are a perfect way to experience the earth like nature of the city away from the glitz and glamour of the resorts if you prefer walking, jogging, or cycling.

Everything in Scottsdale relates to an all-inclusive experience. This is a resort town, which means it's all about shopping, eating out at restaurants, heading to the nearest health club, taking in many festivals and shows that make their way through every year, and generally just enjoying yourself. Nestled in a lush valley, Scottsdale is surrounded by desert terrain and mountains as well, so if you find yourself longing for a little bit of the outdoors it is definitely at your disposal, not to mention the views looking down at the city are spectacular.

    • Apache Junction
Apache Junction is the last small town before you venture out into the Superstition Mountains -- where you will find dirt roads, hiking, three lakes, a damn, and a really good time.

Apache Junction has turned into a retirement village and a "snowbird" landing spot for older folks who wants to avoid the cold weather. The population goes from 10,000 during summer months to 140,000 in the winter months.

Apache Junction is gateway to mining towns, mountain ranges, the Renaissance festival, caving and many other sites. Apache Junction has an amazing thrift store area if that is your cup of tea. They have the standard thrift stores, estate thrift stores, flea markets and antique stores, it is a plethora of shopping delight in attempt to find a bargain or a deal.

Apache Junction is also the start of the Apache Trail, a mostly unpaved road through the mountains, following the Salt River past some beautiful lakes, ending at Roosevelt Dam and Lake. Also near the other end of the Trail is Tonto National Monument, with its fascinating ancient Native American cliff dwellings.
