Fredericksburg is an independent city in the U.S. Commonwealth of Virginia, 50 miles south of Washington, D.C., and 55 miles north of Richmond, Virginia. As of the 2006 census, the city had a population of 21,273.

Located on the Rappahannock River near the head of navigation at the fall line, Fredericksburg developed as the frontier of colonial Virginia shifted west out of the coastal plain. The city has close associations with George Washington, and is home to The University of Mary Washington (George's mother). During the battle of Fredericksburg, December 11-15, 1862, the town sustained significant damage due to bombardment and looting at the hands of Union forces. Today Fredericksburg is the commercial hub of a rapidly growing region in north central Virginia. Historic buildings and museums include the late 18th century Rising Sun Tavern, Hugh Mercer apothecary shop, and the James Monroe law office museum.

Nearby points of interest include George Washington Birthplace National Monument, located 38 miles to the east in Westmoreland County, and the Ferry Farm historic site in Stafford County where Washington spent his boyhood across the river from Fredericksburg. The historic community of Falmouth lies across the Rappahannock to the north and includes the historic house Belmont, home of American artist Gari Melchers.

      • Woodbridge
Woodbridge is an unincorporated communiuty in Prince William County in Northern Virginia about 25 miles (40 km) south of Washington, DC. It is generally defined by Occoquan Creek to the north and Powells Creek to the south. Many of Woodbridge residents commute into Washington DC to work. Woodbridge is a mix of suburban developments and ethnic enclaves. Route 1 through Woodbridge is a crazy quilt of strip shopping centers, fast food, ethnic food (especially pupuserías), billboards, car dealerships, and auto care shops. It has its own vibrancy. Everything is in constant motion! The surroundings become more settled and suburban around Neabsco Creek. The name is derived from a "wood bridge" than once spanned Occoquan Creek.

      • Manassas
Manassas, Virginia, is forever associated with the two Civil War Battles that took place nearby in 1861 and 1862. Manassas was founded as a railway junction point in the 1850s and its strategic location as a transporation crossroads determined the role it was to play in the Civil War.

Residents work in Washington, DC, 35 miles away, and in neighboring Prince William and Fairfax Counties. Long-time residents, however, are keenly aware of the city's unique heritage.
