The Blue Mountains is famously known for the Three Sisters rock formation which juts out of the land and into your eyes. The name Blue Mountains is not derived from the color of the rocks on the mountains themselves (although that would be a logical explanation) but from the blue haze which covers the mountains in the mornings, cause by scattering of light.

Once of the most popular day trips from Sydney, it is located an hour and half drive away from the centre of Sydney (due west) and can be reached by car or train.

Besides having some of the best trails to hike in and go mountain biking once in the national park, the towns around Katoomba are quite nice with shops dotted all over the place and plenty of B&Bs to put your feet up.

It was World Heritage Listed in 2000.

        • Oh Sydney, how beautiful this city is??!!! Full of outdoor activities, surrounded by stunning beaches, crystal clear water, great nature, like the Blue Mountains National Park for example, a green canyon located just 2 hours by train from downtown. They actually are called blue because, for some reason, they look blue from a distance. You won't be disappointed by this masterpiece from our beloved Mother Nature, a place were your eyes will be pleased by incredible views, your lungs will breath clean air and your body will get fit by climbing up and down the mountains. For those who love some action, the park offers some roller coaster moments too, with very much suspended in mid-air cable cars and a quite scary train that goes down a cliff. The latter is especially recommended for those who do not suffer heights. The park is incredibly well maintained, super clean and it is well conceived, making it easy to navigate. If you happen to be in great Sydney DO NOT miss the chance of visiting THE BLUE MOUNTAINS then!
        • Incredible. The Blue Mountains and surrounds are simply stunning and offer a wide range of hikes for various skill and fitness levels. Great facilities surround and offer great selections of food and other shops. The natural wonder however is the highlight. In any conditions there is so much to see and experience if you are up to it.
        • This is a must see attraction for visitors to the greater Sydney area. It's about a two and a half hour drive from Sydney depending on traffic conditions but it's really worth it. There's the vertical cable cars, the sky cable car, the trails, the views and of course the famous three sisters (orphan mountains in the valley range floor). The views are breath taking. There's even a look out point that you can drive to on your way home that lights up the three sisters at night. The views of the stars are awe inspiring as there's very little light pollution here. I recommend taking a guided tour but even if you go it alone you won't be disappointed with this day trip. Plan your trip and travel time accordingly as their are bus loads of people visiting this magnificent place. I highly recommend doing this day trip it's really quite lovely. You'll be glad you did.
        • We LOVED the Blue Mountains! We were lucky enough to get a clear day too. It's about an hour drive from Blacktown/Sydney. Worth the trip up there. The views are amazing and there's lots of trails to check out too!
        • About 2 hours outside of Sydney on the country train but so worth it. Beautiful scenery and landscapes easily available to tourists. This attraction is located right beside the little town Katoomba which has a lot character. Beside the mountains is an area to get lunch, go to the toilets and catch a special show relating to the indigenous peoples of the area. Along the mountains is a 45 min walking trail with a great view the whole way round. Definitely worth the trip out of the busy city.
