      • IJmuiden
IJmuiden is a city in the Dutch province of North Holland, the main town of the municipality of Velsen. It lies about 17 km (10.3 mi) north of Haarlem. In the Roman era, this Velsen district was already inhabited, and archeological finds indicate there was a North Sea port of some regional importance built here. The town suffered heavy damage and demolition during World War II, because of its maritime importance.

IJmuiden is a fairly new city in its present form, and only came into existence in the 1870s when the North Sea Canal was dug, connecting the Amsterdam harbors to the open sea. Before the present IJmuiden was built, the area was known as Breesaap; it was a desolate plain where only a handful of farmers strived to make a living. In 1851 the whole area was sold to the entrepreneurs Bik and Arnold, who finally set into motion plans that had been drawn up already since 1626. The first spade hit the ground on April 8, 1865.

The IJmuiden name literally means “mouth of the IJ”, which is a hint to the importance the town has for the Amsterdam harbor. The name “IJmuiden” first appeared as IJ-muiden in lines written in 1848 by the professor and journalist (and, later, a liberal finance minister in the Van Lynden van Sandenburg Cabinet) Simon Vissering. The present IJmuiden form was eventually adopted in 1876, as the North Sea Canal was being completed in this section.

In 1890 it had about 1,500 inhabitants, but boomed when the Koninklijke Nederlandse Hoogovens steelworks settled in IJmuiden. The statistical area IJmuiden, which includes the surrounding countryside, has a population of 30,466. The headquarters of the Koninklijke Nederlandse Redding Maatschappij is located in IJmuiden.

      • Noordwijk
Noordwijk is a beach resort at the Dutch coast in the North of the province 'Zuid Holland'. Noordwijk is an ideal place to spend a vacation. It is close to both Amsterdam and The Hague. It is surrounded by bulb fields which, especially in spring, turn the landscape into blankets of colors.

Also in the summertime many sun-hungry people from the cities travel to Noordwijk and stay there at the camping sites, the many hotels and pensions or rent a cottage for their vacations.

The town is divided in two parts: the coastal area with boulevards, shops, restaurants and nightlife and 'Noordwijk binnen', the 'inner city'. 'City' is a generous description as the village counts not more than 25,000 people. The town square 'Lindeplein' is worth a visit.

The origin of Noordwijk dates back to about 1200 AD. In those days it were mostly fishermen. Since 1866, Noordwijk can be considered a beach resort.

      • Volendam
Volendam is a touristic fishermans town in the province Noord Holland near to the IJsselmeer. It is famous for it's old fashioned clothing and wooden shoes and houses are still the way it was 100 years ago. Amongst the Dutch people this town is more famous for its "Palingpop"( in english; "Eal pop music"). Many famous Dutch artists are from this small town. Like "BZN","Maribelle","Jan Smit" and "Nick and Simon". "BZN" scored a big world wide hit in the 70's with the song "Chanson D'Amour". Not very well known, but this band didn't start with making Palingpop, but with hard rock!

Many restaurants and bars are in this town. With special day menu's, but mostly menu's with fish on it. Souvenir stores are there plenty as well. In some you can have photo's made while wearing local traditional clothing, also known as "klederdracht".

While in Volendam you can visit Edam for its cheese, you can go there by bicycle, foot, car or bus. Edam and Volendam are in the same municipality: Edam-Volendam. Amsterdam is nearby as well, but that's only nearby by car or bus. Some Dutch might go there by bicycle, but that's not recommendable for non-Dutchies.

Volendam is easily accessible by car and bus.

        • Very big and nice Airport. There should be more signs in English. But the decoration with airplanes parts is amazing! It also has lots of shops and restaurants to eat. However, I recommend eating there ONLY if you are not afraid of rats as they run from shop to shop, that is why I gave this airport 4 stars. I asked about this, and so far, local authorities have not won the battle against these rodents yet. It's a shame, but it is worth visiting because Holland is BEAUTIFUL!!!!!!
        • This was my first time flying internationally, and my first time flying since 9/11. I was a little intimidated by the self-service kiosks, but they're really easy. There are plenty of employees willing and ready to help at all stages of the process. If you have a question, just ask someone. Security was thorough, but not invasive. The workers were very polite when searching me and my carry on luggage. I was traveling with my mother who is hearing impaired and they were very accommodating to us both. I just let them know at the beginning of a conversation. The airport looks like a large shopping mall to me, and I wonder if people ever visit just for that reason. There are plenty of places to eat and to pick up those last minute souvenirs. If you have time to kill on a layover, there's plenty to do. A local woman at the baggage claim asked if we were meeting someone or being picked up. She warned that not all the taxis are reputable. She was glad to hear we were being picked up by our travel agency. So you might want to consider how you will get to your destination from the airport.
        • The security checks are way long. Luggage check in is complected. It took us no less that 1.5h to get from entrance to past passport control. We had to run quite a distance to not be late for boarding. The gates are often switched as well - make sure to check regularly. If you are flying from this airport - arrive 2.5-3 h prior to flight. Not 2h as normally suggested.
        • I recently took a flight within the EU from here. Security check was very thorough and therefore slow. Toilets are rather dirty and crowded. Food is nothing special, just some overpriced fast food and cafeteria items. Decent array of tax free shops. Overall a mixed experience.
        • How on earth someone could rate this place with more than two stars? Toilets are dirty, always queues at security, because the staff there needs to chat in between them about soccer or make some jokes. Also they are sometimes in a "good" mode so they send all the baggage for detailed check. Then you need to wait till the security guys will finish their talk and check your umbrella. People who must fly from here often are praying for their bag not to be selected for detailed control as this means 15 minutes delay. For passport control there are 20 e-gates available, but if any them max 8 are opened at the same time, so you again end up in queue. Shopping is nice, by the primary focus for the airport should be to handle the passengers fast and keep the place clean.
        • A very nice airport and train station. Everything is very modern and clean. There are tons of stores and restaurants on site for a quick snack or a full meal. It’s big enough that you need to be careful not to get turned around or lost. I went through here for both my flight and trains into and around the city. Everything was simple and efficient. One of my favorite airports.
        • So I arrived in Schiphol Airport at 9 o’clock pm and will be having a 14hrs layover. I’ve decided to stay in the airport so that I’ll be able to stay awake because the country I’m going is a completely different time zone and practicing to stay awake is a good idea (I think). I noticed most of the shops are close which is a bit odd but it was okay as long as the coffee shops are still open. Lounge area was pretty good because of the charging port and soft chair. Anyways finding the ways was a bit confusing, information stand is a bit hopeless and passport control area was the downfall. The self serving scanning need to be fix or at least let one guy stay on the desk to monitor but no one was there I ask again the information lady (a bit rude) she said ‘ I don’t believe you, the guys is there 24/7 ( I was like in head geeee you don’t need to be rude. Anyway ) point me back there again. Waiting for the passport guy for to show up. Lucky we saw some people passing though with member card anyhow we decided to go to this lane because what the heck what else could go wrong then we saw this bunch of passport control guys just hiding in this little spot. Great just great.. but all in all was a nice airport.
        • One of the best airports in the world. You can find almost any facility you've ever wanted in an airport here in Schiphol Airport at Amsterdam. From luxury hotels to bars and pubs, gyms, restaurants, high class lounge halls, and many more. If you ever had a transit flight to Schiphol Airport, you should definitely get up and get around! See all the cool places here and enjoy your trip!
        • Excellent airport, everything well taken care of. The building is very efficient with all the gates in branches coming from the central building. Security check to the gates can at times be slow, so make sure to check in early. Lots of shops and restaurants behind security. Prices for food are quite high. WiFi is free and pretty good. Many toilets and kept clean well. Transport to and from Amsterdam very efficient, many buses and trains, check Google Maps for your trip. There are also some night trains and buses. Avoid taxis offered outside the official taxi stands. Long term parking is very expensive.
        • 1. Its like a meeting of two worlds when you are travelling which makes the airport very crowded. 2. If you are connecting somewhere else from here make sure you have at-least 2 hrs of transit time as the procedures like security, boarding at gates (which are pretty far depending on the flight) may go for a toss due to the crowd otherwise. 3. Mediocre management of passengers who are being checked on arrival (The officers don't know a smart way to handle the crowd for checking). Other than this, the airport has all facilities nothing to complain about. One thing which I specially liked are the walking elevators !
        • One of my favorite airports A very Huge and nice airport/train station but the staff is very polite and helpful Everything is very modern and clean, the staff smiling at you while they give you directions. One of the best airports I’ve had the pleasure of flying to. Very well organized, clean, security top notch, super fast & efficient check-in & customs clearance, baggage delivery prompt, seamless train connection to Centraal Station in Amsterdam. This airport makes air travel a breeze! Highly recommend.. stress free!! One of main airports to enter West Europe. very well-managed and efficient. Many restaurants, souvenirs shops, duty-free stores, money changers, and toilet. Staffs here is very helpful. Full body checking with laser machine is required before move to boarding room. Multinational crowds .. tons of stores and restaurants on site for a quick snack or a full meal. It’s big enough that you need to be careful not to get turned around or lost. I went through here for both my flight Everything was simple and efficient.. It offers a wide range of restaurants, cafe, pubs, shops and it is very well structured. It is a pleasure to walk around.
        • Simple, functional airport with friendly, caring, and helpful staff. Easygoing employees made traveling warm and welcoming. Getting around airports can often be nerve-wracking affairs, but not here. Ambiance is utilitarian, with little in the way of art, sculpture, or flair. Perhaps by design, the workings of the airport were efficient and plain and this is reflected in the architecture and decoration. A few larger shops line the central sections with quaint yet classy gifts available, but serious shoppers should go elsewhere.
        • The best place for transit in Europe! The Airport duty free shops\mall the best in Europe. Enough shops and places to eat. One thing to remember they don’t allow any liquid item in a bottle in hand luggage during security check for transit. If you’re having any beverages it must be bottled. Alcohol is allowed but must be packed and seal must not be broken. They will check the density of the liquid inside. Other unpacked liquids are not allowed, not even water. There two hotels inside, post security check zone and prices are not too high.
        • Really, really bloody good airport. Everything is so good. Check-in is smooth and staff are kind and helpful. The shopping mall out the front of the main terminal is great with a relatively large Albert Heijn as well as other big retailers and well-priced cafes. Yes, border check-in can take a while but it has definitely improved other the years. This is especially impressive considering the European hub that Schiphol has become. Overall, staff are great and multilingual, facilities are up to date and overall the airport is probably my favourite in the whole of Europe.
        • Impressed! It is a very well planned airport. Everything is organised well. They have made early morning travel more interesting than ever. Check out and check in was super quick. Waiting time was not much at all. Everything went smoothly and quickly. How efficient!!! Bravo!
