      • Harderwijk

Harderwijk is a municipality and a small city in the eastern Netherlands.

Harderwijk got the rights of city from count Otto 11 of guelders in 1231. A protective wall around the city was formed by the end of century. The previous part of the city is situated near the streets hongstraat and groteprotraat are situated today. Around 1315 the city was expanded southwards, which included the construction of what is now called the Grote Kerk (Large Church). A second, northward expansion took place around 1425. Particularly along the west side of town much of the wall still exists, although often not in entirely original form. This also goes for the only remaining city gate, the picturesque Vischpoort.

Harderwijk was a member of the Hanseatic League. It lies on what used to be the Zuider Zee shore (Southern Sea, now the IJsselmeer) and consequently its economy was strongly based on fishing and seafaring in general. This dramatically changed after 1932, when the Zuiderzee was cut off from the North Sea for safety reasons.

Between 1648 and 1811 the University of Harderwijk operated in the city. Carolus Linnaeus graduated at this university. The university, together with the universities of Zutphen and Franeker was abolished by Napoleon.

Today, Harderwijk is probably known best for the Dolfinarium, a marine mammal park where dolphin shows are held and various other marine mammals and fish are kept.

      • Arnhem
The medium sized east Netherlands town of Arnhem is better known for its past than its presence. Having spent eight days of the Second World War welcoming allied parachutists at the heart of Operation Market Garden. The town has never regained the same notoriety it had for that brief week in 1944. It’s also the sight of ‘A Bridge Too Far’, the spot where British soldiers tried to gain a foothold on the Rhine River, failing despite colossal efforts.

The Garden of the Rhine has a few of its own modern day draws too, though. Those who like their holiday snaps resplendent with stereotypes will enjoy the impressive De Kroon windmill, while those with environmental leanings will take home ideas stemming from the city’s green-friendly trolley transport and abundance of bicycles. The Otterloo Gallery has an impressive collection of Van Gogh’s, and the Airbourne Museum gives a brief taste of those fateful wartime days, not forgetting to explore the more modern side of airplanes alone the way.

The Dutch Open Air Museum is an enthralling mix of Dutch history and costume play, focusing on the more ancient aspects of this impressive nation, while you can get another fill of symbolism exploring the city-center gardens, especially when the tulips are in season. Perhaps Arnhem’s best kept secret is the lively nightlife, unexpectedly vibrant for such a small city, especially around the central squares.

Head out of town and you’ll have the chance to take in Doorwerth Castle (which dates back to medieval times), while slipping across the border into Germany is easily achievable as a daytrip. Above all, though, Arnhem appeals as a small town with a big history and a big heart. If, like many more adventurous travelers, you prefer a taste of the soul of a country rather than a cruise around its more well-known sights, this might well be the perfect spot for you.

      • Apeldoorn
Apeldoorn can be found near National Park De Hoge Veluwe, within the province of Gelderland, in the Netherlands. Apeldoorn is a city with over 155.000 inhabitants.

Apeldoorn is nice to visit for its monkey zoo De Apenheul, entertainment park Koningin Juliana Toren and royal palace Het Loo. Het Loo was originally a hunting-lodge of the dukes of Gelderland, but in its present form dates chiefly from the time of the then Stadtholder William III of England (1685-1686). The oldest sister of the Dutch Queen, Princess Margriet, lives nearby the palace Het Loo, with her husband Pieter van Vollenhoven.

The CODA Museum in Apeldoorn is a museum for contemporary art (specialized in jewellery and paper art) and regional history. The CODA building is designed by the well known architect Herman Hertzberger.

National Park De Hoge Veluwe has the famous Kröller Müller museum where various artworks can be seen (paintings and sculptures) of e.g. Vincent van Gogh, Picasso and Monet and de Veluwe is a very nice area to enjoy nature by walking and cycling through the park. It's a great area to have a picknick in aslong as you don't litter around the park.

TIP: White bicycles are available to visitors for free within the park.

      • Volendam
Volendam is a touristic fishermans town in the province Noord Holland near to the IJsselmeer. It is famous for it's old fashioned clothing and wooden shoes and houses are still the way it was 100 years ago. Amongst the Dutch people this town is more famous for its "Palingpop"( in english; "Eal pop music"). Many famous Dutch artists are from this small town. Like "BZN","Maribelle","Jan Smit" and "Nick and Simon". "BZN" scored a big world wide hit in the 70's with the song "Chanson D'Amour". Not very well known, but this band didn't start with making Palingpop, but with hard rock!

Many restaurants and bars are in this town. With special day menu's, but mostly menu's with fish on it. Souvenir stores are there plenty as well. In some you can have photo's made while wearing local traditional clothing, also known as "klederdracht".

While in Volendam you can visit Edam for its cheese, you can go there by bicycle, foot, car or bus. Edam and Volendam are in the same municipality: Edam-Volendam. Amsterdam is nearby as well, but that's only nearby by car or bus. Some Dutch might go there by bicycle, but that's not recommendable for non-Dutchies.

Volendam is easily accessible by car and bus.
