      • Volendam
Volendam is a touristic fishermans town in the province Noord Holland near to the IJsselmeer. It is famous for it's old fashioned clothing and wooden shoes and houses are still the way it was 100 years ago. Amongst the Dutch people this town is more famous for its "Palingpop"( in english; "Eal pop music"). Many famous Dutch artists are from this small town. Like "BZN","Maribelle","Jan Smit" and "Nick and Simon". "BZN" scored a big world wide hit in the 70's with the song "Chanson D'Amour". Not very well known, but this band didn't start with making Palingpop, but with hard rock!

Many restaurants and bars are in this town. With special day menu's, but mostly menu's with fish on it. Souvenir stores are there plenty as well. In some you can have photo's made while wearing local traditional clothing, also known as "klederdracht".

While in Volendam you can visit Edam for its cheese, you can go there by bicycle, foot, car or bus. Edam and Volendam are in the same municipality: Edam-Volendam. Amsterdam is nearby as well, but that's only nearby by car or bus. Some Dutch might go there by bicycle, but that's not recommendable for non-Dutchies.

      • Edam
Edam, a small city only a few kilometers away from Amsterdam and the "Droogmakerij de Beemster" (Polder de Beemster). This city is famous because of its cheese and the cheese market. The cheese market was revived in 1989 as a re-enactment for tourists. It is held each July and August on the Wednesdays from 10:30 to 12:30 on the Jan van Nieuwenhuizen Square in front of the "Waag" (weigh house). There are two other cheese markets in the province of Norht-Holland: Alkmaar and Hoorn. But Woerden and Gouda have their own too. Only Woerden is commercial and not re-enacted.

There are a few sites to visit in Edam: the "Grote" or "Sint Nicolaas Kerk" (Big or Saint Nicolas Church, one and the same church with cathedral dimensions), the cheese market, the Dam, and the nearby Edam Museum . This museum was founded in the oldest brick house of Edam. It was built in 1530/40 as a private house. Special feature is the floating cellar which rises or falls with the groundwater level.

      • IJmuiden
IJmuiden is a city in the Dutch province of North Holland, the main town of the municipality of Velsen. It lies about 17 km (10.3 mi) north of Haarlem. In the Roman era, this Velsen district was already inhabited, and archeological finds indicate there was a North Sea port of some regional importance built here. The town suffered heavy damage and demolition during World War II, because of its maritime importance.

IJmuiden is a fairly new city in its present form, and only came into existence in the 1870s when the North Sea Canal was dug, connecting the Amsterdam harbors to the open sea. Before the present IJmuiden was built, the area was known as Breesaap; it was a desolate plain where only a handful of farmers strived to make a living. In 1851 the whole area was sold to the entrepreneurs Bik and Arnold, who finally set into motion plans that had been drawn up already since 1626. The first spade hit the ground on April 8, 1865.

The IJmuiden name literally means “mouth of the IJ”, which is a hint to the importance the town has for the Amsterdam harbor. The name “IJmuiden” first appeared as IJ-muiden in lines written in 1848 by the professor and journalist (and, later, a liberal finance minister in the Van Lynden van Sandenburg Cabinet) Simon Vissering. The present IJmuiden form was eventually adopted in 1876, as the North Sea Canal was being completed in this section.

In 1890 it had about 1,500 inhabitants, but boomed when the Koninklijke Nederlandse Hoogovens steelworks settled in IJmuiden. The statistical area IJmuiden, which includes the surrounding countryside, has a population of 30,466. The headquarters of the Koninklijke Nederlandse Redding Maatschappij is located in IJmuiden.

        • Great place to visit with children of all ages. I was there twice. Once with my wife and 1.5 year old boy. My kid really enjoyed this place and played with a lot of the sections there, my wife and I are also enjoyed as adults. We grabbed nice coffee and desert at the first floor coffee house. The second time I was there with a geek friend and it was also fun and highly recommended for all people of all ages.
        • Great science museum for children of all ages. Located 8 min walking from Amsterdam central station so can be reached via trains, trams or bicycles. Everything is self operated, nothing is forbidden, hundreds of activities, all are briefly explained in Dutch and English. No need for a map, just let the kids find their interest. Recommended time for a visit is 3-5 hours. Free lockers available on ground floor. Eat at the restaurant on top level or bring your own snacks. Price is 16.60 euro for ages 4+.
        • Science coming alive A lot of activities for kids of all ages. Take your family and tell them where you are having coffee (in one of the cafes on every level) and hours later some very excited kids come back. It's an interesting place for adults but only really worth the money if you bring at least one or more children. They will have a ball.
        • The place seems oriented mostly towards children. I don't mean to discourage anyone from visiting, but the place feels like that. The exterior design is magnificent, but the actual museum is mostly children friendly. It should be a great destination for families! When the weather allows you to go outside, the open terrace is brilliant as well.
        • The website doesn't do this place justice. If you have kids....or even if you don't....this place is a must. Loads of fun things for them to discover. I thought we'd only be there 2 hours tops. We spent 4.5hrs there. From the interactive exhibits, to the view on the roof, the great food and the brilliant show we had a great time. Highly recommend
        • Absolutely fantastic place! You could easily spend half a day here and enjoy a great lunch! Interactive experiments kept all the family, young and old occupied! Would certainly recommend for families and we will return next time we are in Amsterdam. Best place by far
        • Great museum. Nice to go to on a rainy day or on a beautifully day for that matter. The kids like it so much. You can sit on top of the roof and eat in the restaurant there. You can over see the entire city with good weather. Bring your camera! After a visit you can go to Artis zoo. It's just 15min walk away.
        • Very well managed place. Friendly staff, ability to use lockers for stuff you brought. Ticket is valid whole day. Be prepared to be surrounded by kids 😂. A lot of practical science experiments and well exhibited information. Price is also reasonable. If you are visiting getting the Amsterdam card may be good for you. The weirdest part was a cartoon video on how kids develop from 7 to 15 due to hormones. Appreciated the non-censorship. Science as it should be.
        • I didn’t go inside but i went onto the roof! There were so many kids, the view was beautiful! They have these fountains where you turn the controller and water goes up, and the faster you turn, the higher it goes! The kids loved that! There are also binoculars that you can use to look at the city and they are absolutely free! The whole place is very alive and fun, just hanging out and watching the people, or coming there with kids, or sitting down to read a book, anything can be done there! It’s so much fun :)
        • Must visit for all! irrespective of age.. It's science all over... overwhelming but an absolute delight! Their mini chemistry lab, family workshops and various activities give all visitors a very interesting touch and feel experience with science .. their chain reaction show was the best. Kids loved it...
