  An arty city hemmed in by pretty lakes and home to a vivacious art scene, Minneapolis is all flashy skyscrapers and good time nights out. Unsubtly nicknamed ‘the mini apple’, the heart of the Great Lakes is more comparable to New York than you might think, with a lively, outgoing take on life, all those tower blocks and even the same waterside vibe at lakeside.
  
  As if to flaunt its modernity, Minneapolis has linked most of the city with a series of one-storey-up skyways, connecting the skyscrapers around a length of the city through which you could comfortably run a 10km race. On the ground you’ll find another adventurous take on tourism, with the city offering tours on Segway’s, the up-to-the-minute ‘stand on’ machines that consistently look on the verge of falling over.
  
  The transport’s nearly as interesting as the attractions, and you’ll find yourself rocking up at sites like the new selection of designer buildings and the off-the-wall sculpture park with a smile on your face almost as big as the one the sight of a huge, water-bound apple balanced unconvincingly on an oversized spoon brings.
  
  Minneapolis is proud of its music scene, too, with a buzzing nightlife heavy in both jazz and contemporary rock and pop, as well as plenty of lively clubs. Prince, legendary punks The Replacements and country stars The Jayhawks all got their start in amongst the lakes.
  
  Of course, it wouldn’t be Minneapolis without the lakes, and there are over 900 of them in the immediate vicinity (and in fact more than 10,000 if you’re prepared to look wider afield), each hosting their own unique attraction ranging from full on sailing and windsurfing to a bit of fishing, kayaking and enjoying bird sanctuaries and seductive man-made beaches.
  
  Sitting alongside Vancouver and Boulder as one of those striking North American cities where you can happily blend cutting edge entertainment and a true taste of nature all inside a few hours, Minneapolis can certainly hold its head high.

• Edina

  Edina is a wealthy suburb of Minneapolis. It's a great area to drive around and look at all the fancy homes. It's also a great place to drive around and relax. They have many new shopping areas and entertainment venues around town. Centennial Lakes Park provides some great outdoor fun, without a lot of exertion. They also have a newly revamped Southdale Mall, with some great restaurants and shopping stores.
  
  Edina also has great public facilities including the Aquatic center, the Braemar golf course, for full course golfers...the rest of us can golf in miniature at Centennial Lakes. They also have a beautiful Edinborough park.

  The rooms are nicely decorated, but if you are in a room with three other people, it's not a good time. There is a 'frosted' window in the shower that shows through to the room. I had roommates come in at 3 in the morning and then take showers so the whole room was too bright. I didn't sleep well that night. The hotel says that they focus on high design, but a window that is actually see-through when someone is taking a shower and makes the entire room bright, is not good design. I should also explain that the bathroom in its entirety is not an enclosed room, it is open to the rest of the hotel room. The only way for privacy to go to the bathroom or shower is a sliding door that is not a sound barrier whatsoever. For those reasons alone, I'd give the hotel a 1.5, but it did redeem itself a bit with a great view looking at the US Bank stadium and the free amenities in the room. Their color scheme is lovely and so is the lobby, but the room design is not well thought out. They might have thought the window would make it seem edgy and new, but it doesnt. That's my two and a half cents.

  The room was modern and comfortable. The wallpaper was a bit worn on spots and the door to the bathroom didn't close completely due to an issue with the track. We had some drinks at the bar before bed and shot some pool. That was a nice way to relax. But upon arrival, there was a party at the bar and the walkway was blocked for hours. It would be nice to have the party moved to one side out the other.

  Really cool atmosphere and lighting, hip and trendy. Great food at the bar. Room was nice, but... only sheets on the bed. No blanket, comforter, bedspread, duvet. Not cozy for winter in Minneapolis, cold.

  The hotel was a hip looking, quiet stay. The room was laid out differently then many hotel rooms I've stayed in, maximizing on space(good) but also taking away space by not having a proper dresser with drawers (bad). Not a bad hotel, we stayed in it over Thanksgiving though and with so many things closed it would have been nice to have room service or a downstairs restaurant option. All in all though a nice stay with a helpful staff.

  We had a wonderful stay at the Minneapolis location. Staff was super friendly. Rooms were clean and nicely done. Prices are very reasonable especially so for a downtown hotel.
