• Vinita

  Vinita is a town of about 5500 (down 14% since 2000) located at the intersection of Interstate 44 and U.S. Highway 60 in Craig County in Northeast Oklahoma. It is on old route 66. Vinita was established in 1871 by Elias Cornelius Boudinot. The town was originally called “Downingville” and was mostly occupied by Indians. The town was later renamed for Boudinot’s friend Vinnie Ram who was a sculptor. The town was incorporated in 1898 while this area was still designated as “Indian Territory”. Vinita was the first town in Oklahoma to get electricity and it is the home of the largest McDonalds which is on an archway over Interstate 44. Vinita was the home of gunfighter/lawman Tom Threepersons. Vinita is the county seat of Craig County which was established in 1907 and was named for Granville Craig a Cherokee farmer.
  
  Vinita has a nice historic district with several buildings of historical and/or architectural interest. There are nine locations in Vinita listed in the National Register of Historic Places.
