One benefit of having to live on what essentially is an extended string of live and extinct volcanoes is the huge number of onsen, or hot water springs. The abundance of these naturally occurring phenomena has long made “taking the waters” an intrinsic aspect of the Japanese culture and lifestyle.
Onsen were all originally naturally occurring outdoor rockpools but these days for amenities sake large hotel-style resorts have them built into the design. These allow the hotel guests to relax and de-stress pressures from of the outside-world as they can immerse themselves for a long time in the communal hot tubs.
An experience every visitor should enjoy is spending at least one night in a traditional Japanese inn-style onsen.
Communal baths are common at Japanese inns and resorts. So soap up, then scrub down, and finally shower off completely before you get in any of the tubs.
