Users Assigned: KazmiOriginally part of the state of Virginia until it broke off during the American Civil War, West Virginia is a state full of natural resources, beauty, and a rich logging and coal-mining culture. Often known simply as “The Mountain State” due to the entire state being located in the Appalachian Mountains, West Virginia is home to such cities as Fairmont, Harpers Ferry, Huntington, and Wheeling, while at the same time boasting such resources as the Blackwater Falls State Park, the Monongahela National Forest, the Coal Heritage Route, the Midland Trail, and the Highland Scenic Highway. With its Civil War history, its majestic outdoors, and its quiet residents, West Virginia is one of those states that almost no one ever hears about, but once they’ve visited they just can’t stop talking about.
Along with the many skiing, rafting, fishing, hiking, and other outdoors opportunities available to visitors when they come to West Virginia, the state is also a treasure-trove of American Civil War references. The state was actually formed when it seceded from the Confederate state of Virginia, joining the Union on June 20th, 1863. Of particular note is Harpers Ferry, which was the sight of John Brown’s raid on the Armory in 1959, which is considered one of the major precursor events that sparked the Civil War. And while American history lovers will enjoy their time in the state, it is probably outdoor enthusiasts who have the most to gain from visiting West Virginia. There are six designated wilderness areas within the state, and literally dozens of national and state parks for people to explore. The forests are a mixture of hardwoods such as oak, beech, maple, and sycamore, while the overall mountains are made up of sandstone, shale, and coal beds, giving West Virginia an extremely rugged but exceptionally beautiful appeal, regardless of which season it is when you visit. All in all, for a mixture of American history and natural beauty, West Virginia is probably the United State’s best-kept secret.

GassawayGassaway is a small town of about 900 (pretty much unchanged since 2000) located on West Virginia Highway 4 just off Interstate 79 in Braxton County in the center of the state. The town was laid out in 1904 and served as the terminus for two parts of the Coal & Coke Railroad. Gassaway was selected because of its central location and the fact that it was on the edge of the flat plain leading to Charleston and the more hilly area leading towards Elkins. The Gassaway Depot is very nice and is listed in the National Register of Historic Places.Gassaway, WV 26624, USA

WestonWeston is the county seat of Lewis County, West Virginia. With a population of 4,300 residents, this rural community was formerly known for its glass production and natural gas distrubution. The town was settled on land owned by Daniel Stringer and Lewis Maxwell, and it became incorporated on January 14, 1846.
Located in close proximity to I-79, Weston's attractions include the Lewis County Park, the Weston Farmer's Market, the former State Hospital building (the largest hand-cut stone building in the world). Hotels are available at Marketplace Plaza, just east of town. Various fast food restaurants are within city limits. Home cooking is available at various eateries downtown as well as the Hickory House, about one mile north of Weston on US Route 19. A local winery, Lambert's Vineyards is nearby on Gee Lick Road. From Weston, many other attractions are accessible: the Stonewall Jackson Lake, Stonecoal Lake and Jackson's Mill. Each Labor Day weekend, Jackson's Mill serves as the venue for the Jackson's Mill Jubilee. Crafters and vendors fill the area with fine crafts and food.
Civil War reenactments take place all weekend (Friday - Monday) as well as engine and logging demonstrations. Jackson's Mill is also home to the State 4-H Camp.
