Sligo name literally represents as 'the place of shells' - the town's prehistoric residents had a huge appetite for shellfish, and the remains of the unfortunate crustaceans can be found buried all over the area. Sligo town makes a good base for a range of activities.
  
  Visitors to County Sligo can discover a rich concentration of archaeological and burial sites of the megalithic age. Carrowmore , west of Sligo town is one of the oldest Stone Age cemeteries in Europe. Knocknarea mountain is home to the outstanding tomb of the legendary Queen Meabh. Other evidence of early settlements in County Sligo can be found on Inishmurray Island and at Drumcliffe.

  A second home ... Two wonderful weeks we have just spent in this cottage. It is in nature even more comfortable than in the pictures and we felt completely comfortable and at home. Kieran, the landlord, welcomed us warmly with wine, apple juice and cake and was a very friendly, sympathetic and helpful contact person. We also found an initial equipment in the kitchen, which is anything but self-evident from experience. Tea, coffee, milk, sugar, jam and much more was already present in the kitchen, so that we could not do anything before the first shopping. The house offers everything your heart desires, it is very clean and careful as well as with attention to detail. The beds were very good and the bathroom looked new to us and without affecting the old charm of the house. I can highly recommend the house - if we get the opportunity, we will definitely stay there again. Ein zweites Heim... Zwei traumhafte Wochen haben wir gerade in diesem Cottage verbracht. Es ist in natura noch gemütlicher als auf den Bildern und wir haben uns rundum wohl und heimisch gefühlt. Kieran, der Vermieter, hat uns herzlich mit Wein, Apfelsaft und Kuchen willkommen geheißen und war uns ein überaus freundlicher, sympathischer und hilfsbereiter Ansprechpartner. Auch fanden wir in der Küche eine Erstausstattung vor, was aus der Erfahrung heraus alles andere als selbstverständlich ist. Tee, Kaffee, Milch, Zucker, Marmelade und noch vieles mehr war in der Küche bereits vorhanden, so dass es uns auch vor dem ersten Einkauf an nichts mangeln konnte. Das Haus bietet alles, was das Herz begehrt, es ist sehr sauber und sorgsam sowie mit Liebe zum Detail gepflegt. Die Betten waren sehr gut und das Bad wirkte auf uns frisch renoviert und das ohne den alten Charme des Hauses zu beeinflussen. Ich kann das Haus nur wärmstens empfehlen - sollten wir die Gelegenheit bekommen, werden wir uns auf jeden Fall wieder dort einmieten.
