Beaches can be found at Lagonisi, Saronis and Anavissos. You’ll start to feel the open Aegean as you approach the delightful beach and tavernas at Sounion.
For less developed and less crowded beaches, head along the Marathon coast of eastern Attica. Buses leave from Mayromateon Street in Athens and take about an hour to the area of the famous battlefield.
Along the coastline you’ll find numerous seafood tavernas. Other buses run to Nea Makri and Agios Andreas, or alternatively you can take a ferry from Rafina to the island of Euboea (Evia).
Sailing: sailing clubs throughout the country organize international regattas every year. For more information try the Sailing Federation. http://www.eio.gr/
Yacht Charters: cruising the Aegean islands is a magnificent experience. To find a reputable broker, make enquiries at the National Tourist Organization. There are ads which are placed in the English-language newspapers available here, or alternatively try the Hellenic Professional Yachting Association. https://www.gya.gr/
Skin Diving: the National Tourist Organization (EOT) or many amateur places in Piraeus carry up-to-date information. Snorkeling is not very good along the Attica coast.
Water-Skiing: The best place to ask about facilities is at your hotel desk, as they will know the local schools.
At times a ski school operates at Astir, but at Vouliagmeni it’s a speciality! The Saronic Gulf islands also offer some good water-skiing.
Tennis: there are tennis courts at all the GNTO public beaches, as well as at many municipal athletic centres, and at the Agios Kosmas athletic centre, where you can rent racquets.
You can also play water polo, do horse riding: there are various riding clubs in the area. Mountaineering: at Bafi (altitude 1413m or 4636ft) on Mount Parnes, an alpine refuge hut offers accommodation for up to a hundred people at once. Snow Skiing: winter sports facilities, including a ski-lift, are located on Mount Parnassus.
